Scope has struggled to keep branches open this year after a massive programme of closures was launched, and now another one has been confirmed by the bosses of the branch

A branch of a much-loved charity shop chain has confirmed it’s closing – with a huge sale launched at the same time. Scope is one of the UK’s largest disability charities, and has struggled to keep the majority of its stores open in recent years.

Earlier this year, it was confirmed that more than 60 stores were going to be closing, with closures taking place all the way through until around March 2026. And another closure has been confirmed, with the Bishop’s Stortford branch bosses taking to Facebook to confirm it.

Announcing a statement, they said: “With only two weeks left we have gone into sale early. Pop in to find yourself a bargain this week.

“Every single thing is HALF PRICE. We’re open Tuesday through Saturday 9.30am-5pm. Get it while you can.”

The post was greeted with sad emojis, with the closing date now set for two week’s time – although the exact date has not been confirmed.

Earlier this year, Scope’s Head of Retail Debbie Boylen said the recent move to close several stores was being done despite “the very best efforts” of their teams working at the many branches set to close.

She explained: “Scope has been campaigning for disability equality for over 70 years. Our shops have helped us raise vital income to support our work with disabled people and their families.

“We know our teams put in their very best efforts, but our shops are collectively now losing money when taking account of all of their costs.

“A number make strong profits but there are loss making shops too. We never take the decision to close our stores lightly.

“Over a six week period we consulted with our colleagues and volunteers on proposals to close 77 of our shops. We closed 18 shops in March and are planning to close two shops in April and a further six in May – the dates for other shops have yet to be confirmed.

“We recognise for our colleagues and volunteers, it’s more than just a job. We know they feel passionately about playing their part in our work, creating an equal future with disabled people.

“We will be doing everything we can to support them and our decision does not reflect their hard work and dedication to Scope.”
