A man drove from Carlisle to London to try what is said to be the ‘best Guinness in England’ and he was left unimpressed after finally getting his hands on a much anticipated pint
A popular YouTuber embarked on a mammoth seven-hour trek from Carlisle to London in pursuit of what he reckoned was the “best Guinness in England” – but he ended up far from chuffed with his findings.
Danny, who’s behind the Honest Places YouTube channel, kicked off his video by revealing: “Good afternoon from a service station on the outskirts of Leicester where today I am five hours into a seven hour journey to try England’s best Guinness. Now, I have researched this quite a lot, quite intensively, and I have narrowed it down to this one pub and that one pub is the Devonshire in London.”
The Manchester-based content creator finally made it to the capital, where he parked up his camper van on Hampstead Heath before spending his evening sampling frothy pints.
His initial watering hole was Quinns on Hawley Road, where he was served a glass of Guinness that set him back £6.50. He gave his inaugural pint a modest 5/10 rating.
He then made his way to the King and Queen pub on Foley Street, where he sampled their house ale, awarding it a 6/10.
His next port of call was The Toucan in Soho, having read that it served up some of the finest Guinness pints the country had to offer.
Sharing his verdict, he commented: “Clean glass. No one is drinking anything other than Guinness in here. Seven quid. About right in London innit, seven quid? Good head to liquid ratio.”
He continued: “Ohhh. I’ll tell you what. That is eight and a half. The temperature is perfect. Hmm. That is decent that. That is decent. You know it is a good Guinness when you can knock it back and it doesn’t even feel like you are really gulping the drink.
“That is beautiful, it is going down nice and smooth. Sweet. I am happy with that. Even with seven quid, I am happy with that, it sets us up for the best Guinness. And you expect a 10/10 for the best Guinness.
“Let’s crack on to the Devonshire and have the best pint of Guinness outside of Ireland.”
Following his mammoth seven-hour journey and his rather hit-and-miss collection of pints so far, the burning question remained – would the Devonshire deliver on his sky-high expectations?
The Devonshire boasts an impressive reputation, having served the black stuff to celebrities including Ed Sheeran, Bono and Margot Robbie. GQ magazine is among numerous publications that have hailed it as England’s finest spot for a proper Guinness.
Danny’s initial reaction was promising when he discovered the Denman Street establishment was packed, with punters clutching pints of the Irish stout just like at The Toucan. After shelling out £7 for his pint, Danny headed outside because the venue was “absolutely slammed” before taking his eagerly-awaited first taste.
However, his face couldn’t mask his crushing disappointment as he delivered his verdict: “Seven. Nowt special.”
He went on: “I had better in the other one. Maybe seven and a half at a push but I am not going to pretend, so yeah, that is the Guinness here.
“It is what it is, you can’t win them all, it is not that creamy either, you can tell. The other one was creamier. Seven and a half.
“I’m not happy with that. That is about a seven and this has been raved about. Now I am not a Guinness connoisseur but you know, that isn’t good.”
