MI5 are looking for a technician to join the intelligence service and fitting out vehicles with ‘state of the art technology’ similar to James Bond’s ‘Q’ in the iconic film
Spy bosses are looking for a new James Bond style “Q” to kit out cars with “state of the art tech”. MI5 are advertising for a Vehicle Installation Technician to work in their engineering department in a workshop in London.
The role was described as “far from your usual automotive role, this isn’t about fixing engines or running diagnostics.” The advertisement for the job, paying £42,798 a year to start, said: “As a Vehicle Installation Technician, you’ll work with a wide range of operational vehicles, fitting them with state-of-the-art technology.
“Far from your usual automotive role, this isn’t about fixing engines or running diagnostics.
“Instead, you’ll safely and securely install specialist equipment that supports vital surveillance work.”
In the hit flick franchise, MI6’s Q provided 007 with cars that have numerous concealed gadgets and modifications.
Some of the tech included bulletproof screens, revolving license plates, oil slick dispensers, ejector seats, and machine guns.
The advert added: “You enjoy finding better ways to do things, and here you’ll have ample opportunities to do just that.
“Whether you’re testing electrical systems or refining build standards, you’ll play a key role in enhancing how the team operates.
“That same proactive mindset carries through when you’re working independently on projects, contributing to design, fabrication, planning, and installation at every stage.
“Based in a workshop within a close-knit team, you’ll enjoy a friendly and collaborative working environment, as well as support from the wider department. “
It comes as recruiters at MI5 previously wanted an “in-house” graphic designer to work on material read by real-life 007s before and after missions.
The art boffins needed to be skilled at creating “branding and logos” as well as content for social media, infographics, magazines and reports.
The £36,733 to £40,629 a year London-based role even involved “some limited overseas travel – as part of your training”.
A blurb for the job posted online read: “You’ll bring your ideas to life, by designing business stationery, posters, advertisements, and merchandise designs, making sure everything is clear and accessible for both technical and non-technical audiences.
“This role offers an interesting mix of independent tasks and teamwork, so strong communication and collaboration skills are important.”
Potential recruits were also advised there could be opportunities “to shadow other teams, to gain knowledge in different areas of the business which may be beneficial in your role”.
Benefits included an interest-free season ticket loan, cycle to work scheme, excellent pension scheme and facilities such as a gym, restaurant and on-site coffee bars.
