Liverpool are still being linked with a move for Alexander Isak before the transfer window closes, but Newcastle United have been dealt a blow in their pursuit of a striker
The transfer clock is ticking for Alexander Isak and his proposed move to Liverpool.
Reports suggest there remains optimism that a deal could materialise. However, it appears another obstacle has emerged, with Newcastle United facing a setback in their quest to secure a suitable replacement.
The BBC has reported that for Isak’s switch to Liverpool to proceed, the Magpies must bring in two new strikers. One signing has already been completed, with Nick Woltemade finalising his move from Stuttgart on Saturday.
Newcastle are still working to secure a second forward, with Wolves’ Jorgen Strand Larsen among their primary targets. The Tyneside club have had two offers rejected by the Midlands outfit, with their latest bid reportedly worth approximately £55 million.
Amidst the uncertainty surrounding his future, Strand Larsen was omitted from Wolves’ squad for their Premier League encounter with Everton, watching from the stands as his team suffered a 3-2 defeat.
Following the match, Wolves manager Vitor Pereira dealt a blow to Newcastle’s ambitions of landing the striker in the remaining days of the window.
When questioned whether Strand Larsen would remain at the club, he responded: “I hope so. He is an important player,” reports the Liverpool Echo.
“Today, if he plays, his quality could give us something else. We are not in a situation to sell our best players. The information I have is that he will stay with us.”
Speaking to BBC Match of the Day, he emphasised that his squad “need to bring more players, not to sell players”.
This latest development suggests that Newcastle may have to look elsewhere for a new striker. Any deal they strike could potentially pave the way for Isak to make a move to Liverpool.
Earlier this summer, Liverpool had a £110 million offer for the Swedish international rejected. The striker is keen on the move and is currently training separately from the Newcastle first team.
