Emergency services rushed to a block of flats in St Ives, Cornwall, on Sunday evening after a stairway collapsed, leaving two people seriously injured and one being airlifted to hospital.
Several individuals have been gravely injured following the collapse of a stairway at a block of flats in St Ives on Sunday, August 31.
Emergency services were swiftly dispatched to a property on Carthew Terrace around 7pm after receiving reports of the incident.
The collapse has resulted in serious injuries, with one individual being airlifted to Derriford Hospital. The Health and Safety Executive is currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident, with Devon and Cornwall Police providing assistance at the scene, according to CornwallLive.
A representative for Devon and Cornwall Police stated: ” At about 7pm this evening fire and ambulance attended a property on Carthew Terrace to report of an external stairway collapse. There have been significant injuries, one person has been airlifted to Derriford Hospital.”
“At this time police are attending to support the investigation on behalf of the health and safety executive and there are scene closures in place at Carthew Terrace. There is no wider risk to the public.”
Devon and Cornwall Police’s force manager previously said: “Emergency services are currently on the scene following a staircase collapse on Carthew Terrace in St Ives.
“The incident has resulted in a number of injuries, with one individual already airlifted to the hospital.’Police anticipate ongoing developments and warn of impending road closures in and around the affected area as the situation progresses.”
Reports on social media said that both of Cornwall’s Air Ambulances were called to the scene, the Falmouth Packet reports.
However, according to Fightradar 24, only one helicopter was shown leaving the scene of the incident Back in 2021, seven wedding guests were hospitalised when a wooden staircase collapsed as they posed for photos at a Holiday Inn hotel in in Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire.
The exterior stairway was constructed from the wrong type of wood and had not been properly maintained, the court heard. A total of 10 guests plunged onto the hard courtyard below and seven had to be rushed to hospital. The court was told that two of the victims suffered long-term injuries.
