A family trying to enjoy a relaxing day out at the beach ended up being insulted directly to their face. However, the smug local who had been insulting the ‘rude foreigners’ was given instant karma when she realised that she had made a huge mistake.

Taking to Reddit, a user wrote: “I’m visiting my in-laws in another European country and we went to the beach. It was not busy at all, so we chose a spot and set up our beach mat.”

Everything seemed to be going smoothly, with their 4-year-old starting to play and explore. However, things took an uncomfortable turn when another person showed up.

The post continued: “About 20 minutes in, a woman sets up super close to us, about two metres away. It is weird because the beach is very empty but whatever, we don’t own the space. Some time after that, she’s sighing loudly and staring at us. She takes a call and starts complaining about us.”

The Reddit user claims the woman began telling someone about their child being “too loud” and getting “too close to her”. The local woman spoke in her native language, assuming the family were none the wiser, and continued to tell their friend on the other end of the phone about the “rude foreigners” that were “ruining the place” and also called the child a “brat”.

However, the family understood every single word. And, rather than confront the woman about her cruel words, the Reddit user got their own petty revenge by simply switching how they spoke to each other, adding to their post: “We speak English to each other, but we know the local language.

“She’s looking at us with shock and then goes sullen. After some time, she moves further along the beach. No idea why she chose to put herself in that situation, I guess some people enjoy having a reason to complain.”

Reddit found the whole situation hilarious and shared their opinions on the “entitled” woman that some felt was “looking to be offended”.

One person said: “She clearly wanted to pick a fight or feel morally superior, and it backfired when you understood everything. It’s wild how some people intentionally put themselves in uncomfortable situations just so they can complain.”

Another wrote: “Karen’s are everywhere – bet the look on her face was priceless when she knew you could understand her!” A third commented: “Some people are only happy if they’ve got a problem. They love to complain!”

Another one said: “There is no such thing as ‘looking like’ you may or may not speak a particular language or be native to it. There are so many different situations, especially these days, when families are more mixed, travel and study abroad are more accessible.

“If you aren’t comfortable having your words understood by literally anyone within hearing range, chances are good you should not be saying them at all!” Someone else responded: “Completely agree!”

A fifth person shared a similar experience: “The amount of times this has happened to me, as an Asian-Brit in Asia. It is always a shock to the people who think you don’t understand what they’re talking about—I mean, how rude is it to talk badly about the person that you’re literally right next to, expecting them to not speak their language?”
