The boss of John Lewis Partnership has picked a former Tesco colleague to run Waitrose.

Jason Tarry named Tom Denyard, who leads Tesco’s online business, to lead the supermarket arm of the firm.

Denyard will step into the Waitrose hot seat in January – just as the battle with Marks & Spencer for middle-class shoppers heats up.

James Bailey, who has led Waitrose for five years, announced last month that he would be stepping down at the end of this month.

His exit follows that of John Lewis Partnership chief executive Nish Kankiwala, who stepped down last year after two years.

Tarry, former UK boss at Tesco, has led the partnership – which also runs John Lewis department stores – since last year. Denyard has also held a number of roles at Tesco.

Tarry said: ‘I’m confident that under his guidance, Waitrose will continue to thrive and innovate, building on the impressive progress made by James Bailey and the Waitrose team.’
