Traelynn Sibley, 16, was just days away from starting her junior year at Grandview High School when she was “shot in the throat” while fixing a friend’s hair, according to court documents
A typical teenage sleepover turned into a horrific scene last month, when gunshots echoed through a Kansas City home, claiming the life of one Missouri teen.
Traelynn Sibley, 16, was just days away from beginning her junior year at Grandview High School when she was “shot in the throat” whilst doing a mate’s hair, as per court documents.
Prosecutors claim that teenager was shot at a property on the 3600 block of Norton Avenue on August 9 by Bailey Lewis, 21, who is now facing charges of second-degree felony murder in relation to Sibley’s death.
Investigators suggest that Lewis wasn’t aiming for Sibley when she fired the shots – instead, she was allegedly targeting an ex-friend who was in the house at the time of the shooting. According to investigators, Lewis reportedly had a falling out with this former friend a few months prior.
“The general spacing of the casings seemed to indicate the person(s) firing the shots were in motion southbound … as they were firing,” wrote Kansas City Police detective David Adair in a probable cause affidavit, reports the Mirror US.
Investigators reported that the house and a red Mazda parked outside were peppered with bullets.
“The home had bullet damage/fragments inside and outside and a large amount of apparent blood leading from the living room to the bathroom area,” Adair wrote.
According to witnesses, the night had been peaceful until the gunfire broke out.
The affidavit details a typical evening, with two women doing each other’s hair at a vanity near the front door, another woman in the back bedroom, and two men playing video games in the living room. It was also noted that a toddler was present in the home at the time.
Witnesses reportedly told police they heard gunshots and saw projectiles entering the house through the front door and the living room wall and window area, according to the affidavit.
Sibley “was fixing her friend’s hair at the vanity when she was shot in the throat,” the affidavit continued. “She ran to the bathroom, where she collapsed.”
Sibley was rushed to hospital, where she was later pronounced dead, as per the affidavit.
Detectives were allegedly able to link Lewis to the murder after CCTV footage showed her 2025 Hyundai Elantra driving to and from the scene, according to the affidavit. She was then seen on video shortly after the shooting, exiting the same vehicle, according to the affidavit.
Witnesses informed investigators that Lewis knew where her former friend lived and had been upset over an alleged theft and a separate incident months earlier, where someone got “jumped” at a petrol station.
Prosecutors were also able to connect Lewis to another shooting that occurred about 15 minutes before Sibley’s killing, stating her car was spotted at both crime scenes, according to the affidavit.
Lewis is now up against charges of murder, unlawful use of a weapon, and accessory to armed criminal action. Court records reveal that she’s currently being held on a $400,000 bond at the Jackson County Detention Centre.
