Neighbours actor Matt Wilson has confirmed his emotional exit as Aaron Brennan, leaving fans heartbroken while the soap itself prepares to bow out again in 2025
Neighbours fans have been left devastated after Matt Wilson, who has played Aaron Brennan for almost a decade, confirmed he has filmed his final scenes.
The 37-year-old actor shared an emotional video from set, showing him hugging and kissing cast and crew as he wrapped up his last day on Ramsay Street.
Posting to Instagram, Matt told followers: “That’s a wrap for Aaron on Ramsay St.” He also offered a sweet thank-you to fans, adding: “Reading some of the comments of the last week has made me all warm and fuzzy inside. In a G-rated way of course. Thank you.”
Matt first arrived in Erinsborough back in 2015 and quickly became a fan favourite. His character made history when Aaron married David Tanaka, played by Takaya Honda, in 2018. It was the first ever same-sex wedding on Australian TV, just a year after gay marriage was legalised in the country.
Unsurprisingly, viewers were quick to flood Matt’s farewell post with tributes. One wrote: “So happy for Aaron’s story.” Another added: “Sad to see you go. Seeing such positive LGBTQ representation in Neighbours has been one of the main reasons I’ve watched it again.”
A third fan gushed: “Wishing you every happiness and success for the future.”
Others praised the way Matt brought Aaron to life on screen, by commenting: “Will miss Aaron. For the most part… a very grounded and stable character. Loved his integrity and loyalty to family and friends. Always there when there was fun to be had, and can tell you/he has a great connection with younger cast members.”
Another admitted the constant goodbyes were hard to handle, writing: “All these [Neighbours] goodbyes are getting too much! I have loved watching Aaron over the years. Good luck with whatever comes next xx.”
Speaking in a new interview with TV Tonight, Matt admitted even he hadn’t realised the impact his character would have. He confessed: “I didn’t enter the role thinking that this was going to be such an important character for so many people.
“I didn’t understand the responsibility and the role that was being played, until it did start to go to air… and the flood of messages that came in from people who watch the show and how it touched their lives.”
Matt’s departure comes just as Neighbours faces another end as Amazon confirmed it would not be renewing its deal with Fremantle Australia, meaning the soap will officially wrap up again in 2025.
An Amazon spokesperson said: “Neighbours has brought so much joy over the last 40 years to its fanbase globally. Forty years is an incredible milestone and we are proud that Amazon MGM Studios was able to have a small part of bringing further episodes to Freevee and Prime Video customers over the last two years.”
