Carlos Alcaraz has won the US Open, beating Jannik Sinner in four sets to claim his sixth Grand Slam title at the age of just 22, and return to the top of the world rankings
Carlos Alcaraz has prevented Jannik Sinner from claiming consecutive US Open crowns, demolishing his rival in a dominant display. The Spanish sensation triumphed over his Italian adversary in four sets, 6-2, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4.
Alcaraz now boasts six Grand Slam trophies at just 22 years of age. He’s reached this landmark younger than fellow Spaniard Rafa Nadal, with only Bjorn Borg managing the achievement at an earlier age.
The triumph sees Alcaraz reclaim his position at the summit of the world rankings. This marked the third occasion this year that he and Sinner had clashed in a Grand Slam final, though Sinner was scarcely given a look-in as his rival took control.
Alcaraz stormed ahead early, claiming the opening set whilst some spectators were still queuing to enter the Arthur Ashe Stadium due to security delays surrounding Donald Trump’s attendance. Sinner fought back to secure the second set, but from that point onwards it belonged entirely to Alcaraz.
Sinner rescued two match points in the fourth set, recovering from 40-15 behind to reach deuce. However, Alcaraz seized his third opportunity without hesitation, wrapping up a commanding triumph, reports the Mirror.
The set he surrendered to Sinner in the final was his sole dropped set throughout the entire tournament, underlining his exceptional form.
“I’ve never seen Alcaraz serve like that,” former British No. 1 Tim Henman remarked during Sky Sports’ coverage.
“You think about the great servers in the game, and I now have to put Alcaraz in that category.
“Against one of the great returners, Alcaraz’s serve was absolutely phenomenal. He was able to hit his spots with such pace and consistency.
“He gave Sinner so few opportunities to get into those service games, and it gave Alcaraz the opportunity to play with even more freedom, unleashing. You can see the joy of that performance. It was complete.”
Defeated finalist Sinner was gracious in defeat, saying: “Carlos and his whole team are doing amazing, and I know there was a lot of hard work behind this performance today and it was better than me so congratulations, it’s a great moment for you,
“I tried my best today and I couldn’t do more. The fans here are amazing, seeing packed stadiums. This place is so, so special.”
The champion also praised his vanquished rival, with Alcaraz commenting: “It’s unbelievable what Jannik has done throughout the whole season, a great level in every tournament,
“I see you more than my family! It’s great to share the court, locker room and everything with you, watching you improve.
“This tournament is incredible and it’s a privilege to be a part of it. I feel at home here and feel the energy and love. You (the fans) make everything easy.”
