Youngsters can’t get enough of chips, with almost a million of 13 to 28-year-olds having fried potatoes for breakfast instead of a healthier option
Gen Z love chomping chips for breakfast – and almost a quarter do it twice a week. The equivalent of nearly a million young folk aged 13 to 28 swerve healthy options like avocados and muesli to munch fried potatoes instead.
And six in 10 are so hooked on the greasy grub that they even pile their plates high with fries at lunchtime too, Iceland research revealed.
But nutrition boffin Brian St Pierre warned that the fatty favourite is a dire way to start the day.
He said: “Chips are highly processed, and are specifically engineered so that it makes it hard to stop eating them.
“In fact, chip companies know exactly how much oil and salt to add, and precisely how crunchy to make their chips to maximise your consumption.”
Manchester is the chip-loving capital of the UK, with nearly six in 10 Mancs listing the food as their top choice, followed by Birmingham and London.
Celebs such as Kim Kardashian and Adele also can’t resist the potato treat either.
The London singer told British Vogue magazine that her “death row meal” would be McDonald’s fries, which she gobbles at least once a week.
TikTok is full of influencers discussing the benefits of adding chips to a fry-up.
One says: “Forget toast, it’s had its day. Nothing, and I mean nothing, carries beans quite like chips.
“If you want to take them to the next level, top them with a load of sausages.”
When it comes to what’s hitting the plate at breakfast time, the classic French fry is top with 40% of Brits hailing it their favourite type.
Straight cut and chunky thick cut chips were close behind, while a quarter preferred sweet potato.
