Strictly Come Dancing’s Tom Skinner has opened up about the chilling threats he received following his meeting with JD Vance. The former Apprentice star and the US Vice President shared a meal during Vance’s recent visit to the UK.
However, Tom, known for his controversial online opinions, confessed that many were displeased with his association. The pair enjoyed a summer barbecue in the Cotswolds, with Tom sharing a photo of them together on his social media.
This, however, sparked outrage among internet users, leading Tom to disclose the alarming extent of the backlash. The upcoming Strictly contestant that he was bombarded with death threats afterwards, with individuals accusing him of being a political figure.
Despite this, Tom maintains that he has no interest in politics and could only provide insight into global events if asked. “Now the left seems to be attacking me every day on social media,” he remarked.
In an interview with The Sun, he added: “The right seems to see me as this figurehead and it’s all been a bit much for me, if I’m honest with you.
“I was getting death threats and people calling me controversial. I was thinking, what have I ever done? What have I ever said that’s controversial?
“When you actually go through my tweets, apart from saying that knife crime is bad in London, yeah?”.
He also revealed that he had been receiving death threats for years before he added: “I didn’t see it as anything more than a barbecue, if I’m honest with you. But I’ve been turned into this political figure that I’m actually not.”
Despite accepting the invitation to the barbecue with Vance and happily posting a picture with the top politician, Tom confessed he had been anxious about the meeting.
However, his concern was more about what attire to choose rather than any potential backlash, reports the Mirror.
Reflecting on the meeting, Tom described the politician as “a normal bloke”. “We spoke about English cheese being so much better than American cheese, West Ham United and how they call football ‘soccer’.”
Even though their encounter sparked a massive uproar on social media, Tom stated he has no regrets about the interaction. Instead, he labelled it an incredible opportunity to dine with one of the most influential figures in the world.
He disclosed that regardless of the vice president’s views and whether he agrees with them or not, it was a “wow” moment in his life.
