A man has tragically passed away at a motorway service station after suffering a medical emergency. Birch services, located on the M62 eastbound near Heywood, was the scene of the incident, with emergency services being called out at 10.05am this morning (September 21).

The unfortunate individual, a 50 year old man, is believed to have experienced a cardiac arrest in his vehicle, according to Greater Manchester Police.Regrettably, he was pronounced dead at the scene, as confirmed by GMP, reports the Manchester Evening News.

The deceased man’s family has been notified. Following the incident, access to the Moto service station from the M62 eastbound was temporarily closed off while emergency services attended the scene.

The slip road was reopened around midday today (Sunday).

The Daily Star has reached out to Moto for comment.

This comes after a man was discovered dead on the bustling M90 motorway. The mysterious incident had emergency services rushing to the scene northbound near Rosyth’s junction in Fife, Scotland.

The alarm was raised for “concern for a person” just past 8pm, with onlookers spotting four emergency motors, including an ambulance, rocking up. Not long after, the chap was declared dead right there and then.

The police are called the death a mystery and were looking into what happened. The M90 was shut both ways but was back open a few hours later.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Around 8.15pm on Saturday, 21 June, we received a report of concern for [a] person on the M90 northbound near junction 1C, Rosyth.

“Emergency services attended and a man was pronounced dead a short time later. The death is being treated as unexplained and enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances. The motorway was closed and re-opened around 10:45pm”.

Back in January, a stretch of the M90 was off-limits following a blaze. The Friarton Bridge in Perth got the shutters down in the wee hours of January 14 due to a fire at a recycling centre chucking smoke over the road.

The M90 is a key route in Scotland and bags the title of the most northerly motorway in the UK, stretching from Edinburgh’s doorstep to Perth.

In the UK, approximately 84 to 100 people are killed on motorways each year, with motorways accounting for a much smaller proportion of fatalities and serious injuries compared to their share of road traffic. While specific annual figures vary, the RAC Foundation say that motorways carry about 21% of road traffic but result in around 5% of fatalities and 4% of casualties.
