After enjoying one of the warmest Summers on record, Britain is bracing for a far chillier turn as the mercury is set to drop to lows of -4 with snow and frost on the way
A -4C “polar plunge” is set to bring autumn snow and frosts to Britain, warn weather experts.
Despite sunny skies over much of the UK this week, temperatures will plummet to 12C in a five-day chill from today.
Met Office forecaster Marco Petagna said: “Brrrr – polar air is on the way.”
Frost is set to hit the North this week with lows of -4C due, and the South seeing temperatures hovering just above 0C.
It comes after one of the warmest summers on record. But snow flurries are due in the Scottish Highlands ahead of the official start of autumn on the equinox today.
A forecaster at the Met Office warned: “The first snow of autumn is due on the highest Scottish mountains.”
Mountain Weather Information Service added: “It’s unusually cold for the time of year on Scottish mountains, with bitter northerly winds and snow.”
It comes as tropical storm Gabrielle is set to buffet the country next weekend. Gabrielle, due to be upgraded to a hurricane last night, is spinning across the Atlantic with weathermen warning it will hit the UK with strong winds and downpours from Saturday.
