Sergio Aguero has led the tributes to Miguel Angel Russo, 69, who died on Wednesday evening.

Russo was the current manager of Argentine giants Boca Juniors – who expressed their “profound sadness” at his passing. Russo had stepped down from his day-to-day management duties at the club due to his battle with a long-term illness.

The 69-year-old, who had been diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2017, last took charge of Boca on September 21 – during their 2-2 draw with Central Cordoba in the Argentine top division.

In a statement, Boca said: “Boca Juniors Athletic Club communicates with deep sadness the passing of Miguel Ángel Russo. Miguel leaves an indelible mark on our institution and will always be an example of joy, warmth, and effort.

“We stand with his family and loved ones in this moment of pain. Forever with us, dear Miguel.” Boca added that fans could pay tribute to Russo on Thursday before his wake on Friday.

They added: “Boca Juniors announces that this Thursday, from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m, it will open its doors to bid farewell to Miguel Ángel Russo in the Central Hall at Brandsen 805.

“The wake will continue on Friday from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. To respect the privacy of his family, taking photos or filming in the venue is prohibited.

“The entire community of Club Atlético Boca Juniors accompanies his family and friends in this moment of deep sorrow.”

Tributes have poured in from the footballing world, with Sergio Aguero posting on social media: “A big hug to all the family and friends of Miguel Ángel Russo, a passionate football lover respected and loved by all. RIP.”

While former Manchester United striker Edinson Cavani – who is currently at Boca – said: “Thank you Miguel for showing us all such an important value that is called ‘courage’.”

And Marcos Rojo shared an image of Russo on his Instagram story.

Claudio Ubeda, who was Russo’s assistant, has been in charge during his absence – but Russo maintained close contact with his coaching staff and the club’s hierarchy.
