A pair of secret lovers of a comatose man have put their differences aside and joined forces in a bid to keep him alive after he suffered a devastating brain bleed. The 60-year-old man, known only as YD, fell into a coma last October leaving him in a vegetative state.

To make matters worse for the bloke, the two women he’d been secretly romancing for years discovered his double life after both rushed to his bedside when he landed in an Intensive Care Unit. Following his admission, YD was transferred to a rehabilitation unit under Hillingdon Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

The Trust sought court permission to stop feeding and providing water for YD, a move that would have led to his death. However, his two mistresses fiercely opposed the proposal, arguing that YD would have wanted to keep living, even in his current state.

The pair apparently visit their unfaithful lover daily, providing emotional and physical care, and are “very well attuned to his needs,” the court heard. A solicitor representing YD’s interests argued that the 60-year-old would find his life “dignified” due to the love and care from his partners.

They argued YD, a deeply spiritual man with a passion for the healing power of mind, body, and soul, would wish to continue until a natural end, such as a heart attack or infection.

Mrs Justice Theis, presiding over the case, ruled in favour of continuing YD’s treatment, calling the women’s unity “striking.”

Despite being unaware of each other for 20 and 24 years respectively, JG and MB independently confirmed YD’s strong beliefs in spiritual healing and his curiosity-driven, independent nature.

The judge noted his values would likely support his desire to keep receiving care, especially as subtle improvements had been observed.

While acknowledging the burdens of ongoing treatment and YD’s limited awareness, Mrs Justice Theis concluded that preserving his life outweighed the challenges.

“There is a strong presumption in favour of preserving life,” she said, rejecting the Trust’s application.
