A Liverpool icon has told Wayne Rooney he’s wrong when it comes to Mohamed Salah after the Manchester United legend pulled no punches about his workrate
Wayne Rooney has been told he’s wrong when it comes to Mohamed Salah.
Rooney pulled no punches when he criticised Salah’s work ethic at Liverpool. Speaking on ‘The Wayne Rooney Show’, he said: “I think top players have a bit of an ego, and Mo Salah has been one of the best players in the league for a long time.
“I think the last week has shown something. When it’s going well and you’re scoring goals and winning games, it’s great and the team will put up with that.
“But over the last week, I would question his work ethic. We know he doesn’t always get back and defend as much, but in the Chelsea game his full-back was getting torn apart and he was watching.
“He’s not getting back and helping and players like [Virgil] van Dijk, and the leaders in the dressing room should be telling him, ‘you need to help out’. That was a worry – and I think he has looked a bit lost over the last week.”
However, Liverpool icon Emile Heskey has hit back at Rooney – telling him he’s wrong when it comes to Salah.
Speaking to Pundit Arena on behalf of the Daily Star Sport , Heskey said: “His work ethic is no different to the last five or six seasons. It’s just that he has not scored at the same rate.
“So when he scores, it takes our minds off the fact that he hasn’t done that tracking back because he’s gone and scored two goals and they’ve won 4-3, 4-2. But when you’re losing those are the details that get highlighted.
“I’m sure he’ll get back to his best. Do you risk dropping him or taking him off? I’m not sure you can.”
The Reds are looking to get back to winning ways on Sunday, after a couple off weeks that has seen Slot’s side lose three games-on-the-bounce.
However, it’s a tricky task against Manchester United, who themselves haven’t had the greatest start to the season.
When asked about Liverpool’s recent dip in form, Heskey said: “I would probably put these recent defeats to an early season blip more than anything else.
“But then the thing is, when you look at the other games, we haven’t really done great have we? We’ve probably nicked a couple of games right at the death and then had the last two games we’ve had taken away from us at the death.
“I think we’re still bedding in a couple of the new players, but we’ll get there. At the end of the day, it’s early days and we’re still in the hunt.”
