An investigation has been launched to discover how the child was struck by the train, which reportedly ‘clipped’ the baby girl while she was walking along the road

A one-year-old baby girl has died after being hit by a freight train in a horror incident, it has emerged.

The tragic tot was walking along the road in northern New South Wales, Australia on Friday (November 7), when she was clipped by the oncoming train.

Emergency services were called to the scene, arriving to the incident at around 7.50pm locals time as paramedics began treating the baby for serious injuries before she was taken to the hospital, where she would later die.

The train driver, a 22-year-old man, was taken to the hospital for mandatory testing but was uninjured in the collision in Baan Baa, near Narrabri.

A large cordon and crime scene has been established at the site where the girl was struck, with a report due to be prepared, adding information for the coroner.

New South Wales Police said in a statement: “Officers attached to Oxley Police District were told the child was walking along the road before being clipped by the train.”

Officers have extended their their condolences to the family, adding that further updates are expected as investigators continue their inquiries into the devastating incident.

Narrabri, where the incident took place, is a regional town in northern New South Wales, located at the base of the Nandewar Ranges, with a population of around 15,000 and a strong agricultural sector. The town is known for its relaxed and friendly atmosphere.

It comes as emergency services rushed to a UK train station in response to a fatality on November 6. There was a heavy presence around the train station in Ashton-under-Lyne, off Wellington Road, with emergency workers entering the station.

A British Transport Police spokesman told the Daily Star: “Officers were called at around 5pm today (6 November) to reports of a casualty on the tracks at Ashton-under-Lyne railway station.

“Officers responded with paramedics, but sadly a person was pronounced dead at the scene. The death is not being treated as suspicious and a file will be prepared for the coroner.”
