Jackie Bezos, the mother of billionaire Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, has died aged 78 after a battle with Lewy Body Dementia, weeks after her son’s lavish wedding
Jackie Bezos, the mother of billionaire Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, has died at the age of 78, just weeks after her son’s lavish European wedding.
The Bezos Family Foundation confirmed Jackie’s death on Thursday, stating she passed away peacefully at her Miami home. Whilst the Foundation didn’t disclose the cause of death, they noted that the 78 year old had been battling Lewy Body Dementia since 2020.
Jeff wrote a touching tribute to his mother on Instagram. He said: “After a long fight with Lewy Body Dementia, she passed away today, surrounded by so many of us who loved her — her kids, grandkids, and my dad. I know she felt our love in those final moments. We were all so lucky to be in her life. I hold her safe in my heart forever.”
The Foundation’s statement also expressed gratitude to her medical team who supported her during her illness, alongside her husband Mike, who remained devoted throughout. They wrote: “A quiet final chapter to a life that taught all of us, friends and family alike, the true meaning of grit and determination, kindness and service to others.”
The statement continued: “Jackie’s life of service was second only to her passion for family and gathering. As a grandmother Jackie found immense joy in watching her family grow.
“She passed down not only traditions and stories, but also her values – kindness, resilience, and the importance of togetherness.”
The announcement follows weeks after Bezos wed Lauren Sanchez in an opulent 3-day matrimonial celebration in Venice, Italy, reports the Mirror US.
Scores of private aircraft had descended upon Venice’s airport, whilst luxury yachts sailed into the city’s renowned canals. Sports stars, A-listers, social media personalities and corporate titans gathered to celebrate in splendour that showcased both the couple’s romance and their remarkable fortune.
Venice, renowned for its intricate network of canals where gondoliers serenade enamoured couples and even ambulances navigate the waterways, presents unique challenges for hosting events. This is according to Jack Ezon, CEO of Embark Beyond, a luxury travel advisory and destination event service.
Ezon, whose firm has organised a dozen high-end events in Venice, said: “It’s a very tight-knit community; everyone there knows everyone, and you need to work with the right people. There’s very tight control, especially on movement there with boats.”
The cost of staging an event in Venice is at least triple that of hosting the same party in Rome or Florence, he revealed. Veneto Governor Luca Zaia was the first to provide an estimated cost for the Bezos/Sánchez celebration: He informed reporters that the most recent total he saw ranged between 40 million and 48 million euros (up to $56 million).
Jeff and Lauren made one request at the top of their invitation: “Please, no gifts.”
Instead, they pledged donations in honour of each guest to three beloved Venetian charities dedicated to preserving the city’s age-old allure.
The remainder of their wedding invitation read: “Instead, we’re making contributions in your honour and with gratitude to you for making the journey to celebrate with us in Venice.
