Jack Osbourne said he encountered “unexplainable” paranormal phenomena at his Grade-II listed home in England, returning there to shoot various ghost shows for TV
The Osbournes aren’t afraid of no ghosts.
Seeking spectres comes easy to the family after Jack and his sister Kelly grew up in one of Britain’s most haunted homes – Welders House in Buckinghamshire. They lived at the seemingly cursed property with their late rockstar dad Ozzy and Sharon.
It’s Jack Osbourne’s 40th birthday today (November 8) and he’s rumoured campmate on this year’s I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here!. It’s said he could be joining the likes of Lisa Riley and Martin Kemp in the jungle.
So what better time is there to take a look inside his haunted childhood home?
Asylum past
Built between 1898 and 1899, the Grade-II listed property is located in the village of Jordans, Buckinghamshire. It was originally constructed for politician Charles Thomson Ritchie by his son-in-law – but by 1910 it had been purchased by the governors of St Luke’s Hospital for Lunatics.
From 1911 to 1916 it served as a convalescent home for women suffering from “mild nervous maladies”, before being purchased by the War Office during World War I for nurses suffering from mental strain of the conflict – what we now call PTSD.
In its long life, the house has also served as a nursing home. In the 80s, Oscar-winner John Stears purchased the property, before it was taken over by the Osbournes in 1993.
‘Unexplainable’ encounters
In 2022, Jack hosted a new ghost hunting show for Discovery+ – Haunted Homecoming. In the doc, he returned to his childhood home to investigate the “unexplainable things” he encountered back in the day.
Jack confessed that he felt as though the house “cursed” his family. He explained on Good Morning Britain: “The house used to be an insane asylum, and that was before we moved in.”
Recalling one particularly spooky encounter, he said: “It sounded like someone was running their hand along the closets in the hallway. Initially I thought, ‘Oh, my God, someone’s broken into the house’ and when you’re a kid it’s like, ‘Oh, there’s a robber, let’s get out of here’. To this day, we still have no idea what the experience was all about.”
He later recalled on the show: “When Kelly and I were kids, we were off school through illness and home alone. We were watching TV in my parents’ bedroom. The floorboard on that landing makes a very distinct sound and we heard someone walking along – very heavy-footed.
“Whatever was making those footsteps was rattling the cupboard doors along the corridor. We were so convinced the footsteps were coming for us, we opened a window and thought about jumping.” Instead, they hid under the bed.
Even Jack’s friends have encountered a ghostly presence at the house, with him recalling one staying over with his wife. “[He heard a piano playing and a woman singing – but nobody was there. The following morning they shared what they heard with each other.”
Family ‘curse’
Spooky footsteps and piano playing aren’t the only things the Osbournes experienced while living at Welders. Three mysterious fires broke out at the home – something Jack recalled when chatting to GMB host Ben Shephard.
Ben joked: “[Sharon] just put it down to your dad leaving a candle alight – there were a lot of candles at home, Jack!” but Jack insisted: “There was, but that was before the fire. There have been about three fires in the house. One of them started randomly in the wall, it was very strange. It’s just a theory I’m working with […] there has been a lot of weird stuff [happen] there.”
In 2006, fire engines rushed to Ozzy’s home after a “faulty lamp” started a hallway blaze and set off fire alarms in the early hours. Staff soon called 999, with Bucks Fire and Rescue Service spokesman Fraser Pearson telling press at the time: “We believe a call was made by a member of staff at the house.
“Fortunately we were alerted to the fire quickly enough that it did not spread. There was some fire and smoke in the hall and a bit of smoke through the house.”
That’s not all. In 2005, just a year earlier, another blaze broke out in the property as Sharon and Ozzy slept, forcing them to flee in the middle of the night with their pets. They were treated for smoke inhalation as fire services battled the fire – which caused damage of “thousands of pounds”.
That same year, Ozzy tackled an intruder in the home before the assailant jumped out of a first-floor window, escaping with jewellery estimated to be worth £1million. Even Sharon’s 10-carat diamond wedding ring was stolen.
In 2003, Ozzy suffered a near-fatal accident on his quad bike while riding around the house’s grounds. The accident left him with a broken vertebra in his neck, a broken collarbone and six broken ribs. His broken bone was resting on a major artery and interrupting blood flow to his arm, with bleeding in his lungs also treated by surgeons.
Sharon ‘attacked by demon’
While this didn’t take place at their family home, this terrifying incident is perhaps evidence of the family’s curse. Jack said his mum Sharon may have suffered a “spiritual attack” while filming his ghost-hunting shows, Night of Terror.
Sharon had joined her son for a ghostly investigation which was “more stressful” than anything she’d done before. She became unresponsive when in an “extremely haunted” room at the Glen Tavern Inn in California and “stopped breathing”.
Camera crews immediately called 911 and Sharon was hospitalised for two days, with Jack explaining: “They ran every single test imaginable on her, from MRIs to CAT scans to EKGs to brain activity scans.
“They checked for stroke and seizure and aneurysms and heart conditions and sleep conditions. They checked for everything and she was in complete normal health. The doctor was like, ‘Okay, I’ve never seen anything like that. I don’t even know what that is.'”
He admitted he believes his mum was the victim of a “spiritual attack” despite being skeptical about “demonic” activity. He said it “has definitely shifted my perspective on things. And I avoid the hysterics of demonic attack. Like, I’ve always thought, ‘Okay. That’s just people playing up for the cameras.’
“But I can’t explain it any other way than that was some kind of… I mean, I almost cringe to say it. I believe it was some kind of spiritual attack. I was really scared, like, ‘Really? My mom’s about to f****ng die while we’re doing a ghost hunt? No, that’s not supposed to happen.”
