Temperatures in the UK will be hotter than Turkey as they soar towards 20C this week before a 500-mile wide -5C “polar plunge” is unleashed
Britain will be as warm as Turkey with wet and mild conditions this week. But the warm weather will swiftly end up flipping to snow and cold.
Temperatures will soar towards 20C this week before a 500-mile wide -5C “polar plunge” is unleashed. Forecasters reckon five inches of rain will batter Scotland with two inches in western areas and an inch for most other parts of the UK. And warm continental air will see the mercury reach the high teens by Friday, approaching the 20.7C record for this time of year.
It will be similar to holiday hotspots like Bodrum in Turkey which is forecast to reach 19C on Friday and Saturday.
Netweather forecaster Nick Finnis said: “Exceptionally warm air will spread north, with the high teens possible by Friday, but it then turns colder.”
The Weather Outlook forecaster Brian Gaze said: “It looks like a ‘flip the switch’ moment, with a rapid change in the pattern.”
But from the weekend, temperatures are set to plunge due to chilly Arctic air sweeping in. There are expected to be highs of just 6-8C across the UK from next Monday (November 17).
Subzero nights are due in the North with near-freezing in the South. And snow flurries are forecast in Scotland.
A Met Office forecaster said: “Heavy showers are forecast through Monday and Tuesday, with from midweek seeing bands of rain spreading across most areas, although it will be mild.”
BBC Weather added: “Colder air looks like infiltrating from the weekend, with snow over higher ground in Scotland. And it turns chillier afterwards, with winds from the northerly quarter and temperatures a little below average in the North.”
It comes after Bonfire Night on Thursday was the warmest ever recorded with temperatures staying above 14C. The previous record of 13.9C, was set in 1938 at Gordon Castle in Scotland.
Typical overnight temperatures at this time of year range from 2C in Scotland to 5C down South. But in the first week in November they have hovered around 10 to 14C.
