The Stone Roses bassist Gary Mounfield, also known as Mani, gave his final interview in October and admitted he was “ready to get back” to performing and was “in a great space”
Gary ‘Mani’ Mounfield was “in great space” and “ready to get back” to performing just weeks before his death.
In one of his last interviews, that took place just last month, Mani said that he was “itching to get back” into playing music after visiting his storage unit, where he stored his bass guitars. The move prompted him to take up music once again shortly before his death on 20 November age 63.
While speaking on The Rockonteurs podcast, which aired on 18 October, he confessed: “I’m in a great space at the moment. Itching to get back bro. I’m ready to get back. Johnny Marr’s always trying to get me to do stuff.”
“Liam [Gallagher] was always trying to get me involved with stuff before the Oasis thing. I’m feeling now that I could pick up again, you know? I’ve been in the lock up [storage unit] having a look at stuff and weeding out my collection.”
Mani told hosts Gary Kemp and Guy Pratt that he had attended four Oasis gigs throughout the Britpop legends’ current reunion world tour, which included a Wembley date alongside fellow Stone Roses guitarist John Squire.
He praised the Gallaghers: “They’re better now than ever, There’s not as much chaos and madness surrounding it and it becomes something with the benefit of a bit of age and, y’know. maturity.”
The bassist also mentioned that he regularly chats with Stone Roses’ legendary frontman Ian Brown via WhatsApp.
In his final message to fans, Mani admitted that he was “getting too old” and was preparing for his “final road trip” in a post on his Instagram. He shared details of his upcoming musical tour, with plans to travel across the UK, scheduled for late 2026 and early 2027 featuring 69 performances nationwide.
The tour was called The Stone Roses, Primal Scream and Me – An Intimate Evening with Gary ‘Mani’ Mounfield and he told fans: “I think @mm embarking on what could be my final road trip….. Getting too old now…. Anyway, there’s a lot to go at…. Anybody wanting to hear s******** off of bandmates … or titbits of dirt, conjecture and gossip…. I’m not that guy…”
“I will be giving my skewed vision of my own life, I never did and would never rat on my comrades… hope you come out and say hello.”
