Richard Branson purchased a private island, which he has said he owes to Joan, two years after the couple met – they were set to celebrate their 50th anniversary in only three months time
Richard Branson said “everyone needs a Joan in their life” as he shared a heartbreaking final picture with his wife just days before she died.
The Virgin boss took to Instagram to post a snap of himself with Joan at an event on November 15. In the picture, both are dressed up with glasses of champagne in their hands, and Richard is planting a kiss on Joan’s head.
Richard paid emotional tribute to his wife Joan with a post on social media after sharing news of her death.
Branson announced the death of his 80-year-old wife on Tuesday, November 25. She passed away just three months before the 50th anniversary of the day the couple met.
In the post’s caption, Branson, 75, said he was “heartbroken to share that Joan, my wife and partner for 50 years, has passed away.”
“She was the most wonderful mum and grandmum our kids and grandkids could have ever wished for. She was my best friend, my rock, my guiding light, my world. Love you forever, Joan x.”
Joan was born in Glasgow, Scotland in 1945 and worked several jobs throughout her younger years, including running an antique store.
The couple met in 1976. Branson would go to the shop to buy vintage signs from her, which ended up all over the houseboat he lived on at the time, The Mirror reported.
They had two children: Holly, 44, and Sam, 40. Joan and the businessman married on Necker Island, situated in the Caribbean Sea, in 1989.
Branson has said owes the island to Joan and revealed how he came to own the private island he calls home. He has said that he wanted to show Joan a gesture of grand affection two years after they first met, The Mirror reported.
Branson has credited Joan with some of his biggest business succusses. The couple came up with the slogan ‘Now That’s What I Call Music!’, which went on to become the biggest-selling album series in history.
