Eight in 10 ‘walking dead’ Brits (78%) moaned they did not get enough shuteye – with the average UK adult getting around just six-and-a-half hours a night
Britain is a nation of sleep-deprived zombies who constantly feel dead beat.
A terrifying three in five Brits – some 61% – rise every morning feeling exhausted, while a tenth report feeling “tired all the time”.
Eight in 10 ‘walking dead’ Brits (78%) moaned they did not get enough shuteye – with the average UK adult getting around just six-and-a-half hours a night.
NHS experts recommend we bag seven to eight hours of solid snoozing per night to stay healthy and alert.
The study by health supplements firm Vitawell said they typical six hours and 36 minutes we actually get was turning us into zombies. It said: “On a day to day basis this may not seem vastly different, but over the course of a week it’s equivalent to losing almost a full night of rest.”
More than two thirds of Brits who responded said poor sleep impacted their mental and emotional wellbeing, while more than half said it affected their physical health.
The report said: “The UK is officially running on empty. A new report from vitamin and wellness brand Vitawell has revealed a national sleep crisis, with millions of us struggling to get sufficient rest, resulting in poor focus and low mood.”
Women are twice as likely as men to constantly feel like the living dead, despite getting a similar amount of sleep to blokes. The study found anxiety, long work hours and endless scrolling on phones were among the biggest culprits keeping the UK awake at night as we “battle a world of constant connectivity”.
But more than one in 10 folk use meditation or breathing exercises to help get a restful night, while a quarter are cutting down on screen time before bed.
John Sutcliffe, managing director at the firm based in Skipton, North Yorkshire, which surveyed 2,000 Brits, said: “Sleep deprivation is silently draining the nation’s health and happiness and will soon become the norm if we don’t do more to tackle it.”
