Alan Shearer has given his Premier League predictions and has given a gloomy Manchester United verdict despite Ruben Amorim being close to signing Benjamin Sesko from under Newcastle’s nose
Alan Shearer has given his predictions for the upcoming Premier League season, suggesting that there may not be many surprises at either end of the table.
Last season, Liverpool’s dominance and consistency from the get-go left little room for a title race. The Reds have splashed out significantly, including the record-breaking British signing of Florian Wirtz, in their bid to secure back-to-back titles. With Alexander Isak potentially heading to Anfield in another record fee, Shearer sees no other contender for the championship besides Liverpool.
Leeds, Burnley and Sunderland have all made their way back to the top tier. They’ll be keen to break the worrying recent pattern of promoted teams being relegated straight back to the Championship.
However, Shearer predicts that all three will only enjoy a single season in the Premier League before returning to the second tier. This would mark the third consecutive year that the trio of promoted teams fail to maintain their top-flight status, underlining the stark divide between the Premier League and the Championship.
Arsenal are predicted to finish as runners-up for the fourth year in a row – a prospect that won’t sit well with Mikel Arteta. Despite significant investment, including the addition of Viktor Gyokeres as his main striker, Arteta may still fall short of the coveted title, increasing the pressure on him.
Manchester City had a disappointing run last season and are facing their first year without Kevin De Bruyne in a decade. Despite bolstering their squad, Shearer doesn’t believe Pep Guardiola and his team will reclaim their title, instead placing them in third.
Manchester United, the cross-town rivals, hit rock bottom last season but have bolstered their attacking line-up with some big signings as Ruben Amorim seeks to turn their fortunes around.
The pundit anticipates an improved season, albeit not one that sees them return to the Champions League, despite United being favourites to land RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko from underneath his beloved Newcastle’s nose. The Geordie icon stated it would be “disappointing again from Newcastle” if they missed out on the 22-year-old.
He predicts that Chelsea and Newcastle – two clubs with starkly contrasting summers – will both outperform the Red Devils. The Magpies’ season could pivot on whether Isak stays or if they can secure a top-tier replacement. Chelsea, on the other hand, have had no trouble attracting attacking talent.
Last year’s dark horse, Nottingham Forest, will need to juggle domestic duties with Europa League commitments. This presents a fresh challenge, but Shearer is confident they’ll remain in the top half of the table.
Tottenham have ushered in a new era, parting ways with Ange Postecoglou despite his European triumphs. Thomas Frank has a daunting task ahead, but Shearer believes they’ll clinch eighth place, just behind Aston Villa.
The Midlands club have reaped the benefits of Unai Emery’s leadership, but with fierce competition at the top, they’re expected to miss out again.
Brentford, now under Keith Andrews’ stewardship, are tipped to narrowly avoid relegation, finishing just above the bottom three in 17th place. West Ham are also predicted to face a tough season, despite Graham Potter taking the reins for his first full term in London.
For clubs like Everton and Crystal Palace, it’s another secure year in the middle of the table. The Eagles will be playing in Europe, albeit not in the competition they earned.
Fulham, Wolves and Bournemouth are expected to stay relatively safe. Brighton, sitting in tenth, might have aspired for more under Fabian Hurzeler.
