President Donald Trump has pledged to make Washington, D.C “safer and more beautiful” by tackling the city’s homelessness issue.

Trump shared images of tent encampments on Truth Social on Sunday, alongside the caption: “The Homeless have to move out, IMMEDIATELY. We will give you places to stay, but FAR from the Capital.

“The Criminals, you don’t have to move out. We’re going to put you in jail where you belong. It’s all going to happen very fast, just like the Border. We went from millions pouring in, to ZERO in the last few months. This will be easier – Be prepared.

“There will be no “MR. NICE GUY.” We want our Capital BACK. Thank you for your attention to this matter!”

This follows Trump’s repeated assertions that Washington D.C. is “one of the most dangerous cities anywhere in the world.”

Last week, Trump also suggested federal control over D.C.’s police force and deploying National Guard troops to tackle crime.

Trump’s focus on crime comes after a series of violent incidents in D. C., including Edward Coristine, a 19-year-old former DOGE staffer, nicknamed “Big Balls”, was attacked by a group of teenagers during an early morning attempted carjacking last weekend, reports the Mirror US.

“We have a capital that’s very unsafe, you know, we just almost lost a young man, beautiful, handsome guy that got the hell knocked out of him,” Trump said of the incident.

He stated that the crime was “out of control” with young “thugs” and “gang members” who end up “randomly attacking, mugging, maiming, and shooting innocent citizens.”

However, Washington’s crime rate is down this year compared to 2024. Violent crimes are 26% lower than last year. Homicides are down 12%, according to statistics compiled by the Metropolitian Police Department.

Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt told Fox News in a statement last week that Trump “has directed an increased presence of federal law enforcement to protect innocent citizens. Starting tonight, there will be no safe harbor for violent criminals in D.C.”

She also commented: “Washington, D.C. is an amazing city, but it has been plagued by violent crime for far too long.”

The move follows an executive order Trump signed in March that established a “Making D.C. Safe and Beautiful Task Force” composed of federal department heads who were instructed to “maximise resources” to make the District of Columbia safe.
