A man has tragically lost his life at a bank holiday family funfair following severe head injuries sustained in an incident involving a fairground attraction. Emergency services, including police, paramedics and the air ambulance, rushed to Spanish City Summer Funfair in Whitley Bay on Saturday afternoon.
An off-duty medical professional also provided assistance at the scene. Tragically, despite the valiant efforts of medical personnel, a fairground employee in his 20s has passed away, Northumbria Police have confirmed.
The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has been notified to assist in determining what occurred, reports Chronicle Live. The funfair has been shut down following the tragedy and will remain closed throughout this Bank Holiday weekend.
North Tyneside Council Chief Executive Jacqueline Laughton stated: “This is a tragic incident and our thoughts and condolences are with the man’s family. Spanish City funfair will not reopen this Bank Holiday weekend.
“The investigation is in the hands of Northumbria Police and the Health and Safety Executive and we are not able to comment further at this time.”
On Saturday evening, a Northumbria Police spokesperson revealed: “Shortly after 2.15pm today (Saturday), we received a report that a man had been injured in a workplace accident at Spanish City Summer Funfair in the Spanish City Plaza area of Whitley Bay in North Tyneside.
“Emergency services attended and a man in his 20s was found to have suffered serious head injuries. Despite the best efforts of medical staff who attended the scene, a short time later, the man was sadly declared dead.
“His next of kin have been contacted and are being supported by specialist officers. Our thoughts are with the man’s family at this extremely difficult time.
“We have contacted the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) and are working with them to establish exactly what happened. The fair has been closed to the public and will remain closed until further notice.
