Gianluigi Donnarumma is reportedly interested in joining Manchester United, with the Red Devils in the market for a potential replacement for calamity keeper Andre Onana
Gianluigi Donnarumma is reportedly eyeing up a move to Manchester United, as Paris Saint-Germain are on the brink of signing a new shot-stopper.
Donnarumma, 26, has been instrumental in PSG’s recent triumphs. The Italian skipper clocked up 47 appearances in all competitions last season, steering PSG to Champions League, Ligue 1 and Coupe de France glory, making them the first French club to bag a continental treble.
However, Donnarumma’s contract only runs until 2026 and negotiations for a fresh deal seem to have hit a snag. As per a report from L’Equipe, PSG have struck a deal to bring in Lille goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier.
The report suggests that a fee of €40million (£35m), not including bonuses, has been agreed for the 23-year-old. PSG aim to seal the transfer ahead of their European Super Cup face-off with Tottenham on August 13.
Consequently, it seems Donnarumma is set to bid adieu to Paris this summer and TEAMtalk reports that United have ‘officially expressed their interest’. The report indicates that United reckon a deal would be ‘very difficult’ at present, but the situation could evolve, reports the Mirror.
Donnarumma is reportedly keen on a switch to Old Trafford due to United’s prestige, despite them not featuring in the Champions League next season and coming off their worst ever Premier League finish, in 15th.
Andre Onana, currently United’s top pick for goalkeeper, has faced criticism ever since his £47m transfer from Inter Milan in 2023 due to a string of blunders and erratic performances. When quizzed about his future plans earlier this summer, Onana responded: “Will I leave? I don’t know, we’ll see!”
United manager Ruben Amorim, however, is backing the 29-year-old to bounce back stronger this season. “I think even when you talk about Andre, you can see the goalkeepers,” Amorim shared with journalists.
“Even Tom [Heaton] is leaner, he’s a different goalkeeper. Altay [Bayindir] did really well, and Onana is going to be better, like the other guys, this year. I think are we better in every detail, in the organisation of the day-by-day.
“The nutrition is better, the way we cook, what we eat, how we prepare training. I think that we are more organised. I think we have people now that help us to be better. I’m not concerned with small things and I was last year.
“So, those things help us and help me to think more about watching the game, watching the team. So it’s a big help for me. When it’s a big help for the technical staff, it’s a big help for the players.”
