Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) develops in the top layer of the skin and is usually caused by sun damage. It grows slowly and rarely spreads, but surgery is often required to remove it. According to the NHS, BCCs are most common on sun-exposed areas such as the face, head, neck and ears. Patients are typically considered cured once the cancer has been completely removed.
