Royal Mail has unveiled its new ‘postboxes of the future’ featuring solar panel scanners that it says will make the process of sending small parcels ‘much easier’
Royal Mail has unveiled its “postboxes of the future”, which are being deployed nationwide over the coming weeks. Keeping the iconic red colour, 3,500 of these revolutionary postboxes have been created to enhance accessibility to certain services.
The postal service turned to TikTok on Wednesday (August 27) to showcase how Britons can take advantage of these boxes. A staff member declared: “We’re giving our iconic postboxes a real glow-up. These new postboxes feature a solar-powered scanner and have a slot that is twice the size of a regular postbox.”
The innovation has been engineered to make sending small parcels “even easier”, according to Royal Mail.
But how does it work? “Just scan the 2D barcode on the label and the slot will open for you,” the worker explained.
“Then, pop your parcel in and you’re good to go. You can also request proof of posting using the Royal Mail app.”
The postal giant says this initiative aims to simplify parcel posting via postboxes, whilst packages can still be deposited at Parcel Lockers or ParcelShops.
Responding on social media, one TikTok user applauded: “This will definitely put Royal Mail back in the running against other companies.”
Another person declared: “Will be great because I’m fed up of our local Post Office refusing to take parcels because ‘they are inconvenient and get in the way for them’.”
A third commented: “What a truly wonderful idea, well done Royal Mail makes it easy for full time workers and shift workers.”
A fourth TikTok user asked: “Very useful, are these retrofitted and adapted from the existing postboxes?” To which Royal Mail confirmed: “They are!”.
Jack Clarkson, managing director of out-of-home and commercial excellence at Royal Mail, stated: “We are all sending and returning more parcels than ever before.
“This trend will only continue as online shopping shows no signs of slowing, particularly with the boom of second-hand marketplaces.
“There are 115,000 postboxes in the UK located within half a mile of 98% of addresses, making them by far the most convenient network of parcel drop-off points in the UK.
“Our message is clear, if you have a Royal Mail label on your parcel, and it fits, put it in a postbox and we’ll do the rest.”
