Cash-strapped Britons are opting for ‘dupes’ of upmarket perfumes at the suggestion of influencers recommending cheap alternatives.
New Barclaycard data reveals many women are cutting back on spending by buying duplicate scents on the High Street that smell much like a costly equivalent, though Aldi, Home Bargains, Marks & Spencer, Tesco, Zara and others never claim similarities.

In the marketing and packaging of these products there is no allusion to any similarity. Instead their popularity has been fuelled by social media influencers, who are telling viewers that scents such as M&S White Coconut, costing £10 for 100ml, has the same smell as Sol de Janeiro’s Brazilian Crush Cheirosa ’62’ EDF, at £62.40 for 50ml.
And Aldi’s £9.99 Lacura Sandalwood Scent and Tesco’s £8 Skin Saints Santal are said to be as good as Estee Lauder-owned Le Labo’s Santal 33 at £238 for 100ml.
