UK tourists warned as rare red alert issued for several popular tourist hotspots

Holidaymakers in Alicante and Benidorm have been hit with a rare red weather warning as temperatures are set to soar to 42C on Monday, August 18. The Alicante coastline and the Vega del Segura region, encompassing the city of Murcia, are under a red alert for scorching temperatures from midday today (August 18) through to the evening.

Meanwhile, amber warnings are active across southern Spain with temperatures expected to hit 40-42C. This covers Huelva in the southwest and Seville.

Yellow warnings have been issued for central and northeastern Spain. Whilst conditions won’t be quite as blistering, temperatures are still predicted to climb into the high 30s, reports the Manchester Evening News.

Similar conditions are anticipated in the Balearic Islands. Ibiza, Formentera and northern Majorca are under amber heat warnings, with highs of 39C predicted.

Menorca, however, is under a yellow alert and the island could experience temperatures reaching 36C. No warnings are currently in place for the country’s northwest.

Forecasting for Monday, August 18, Aemet stated: “Significant drop in temperatures in the northwestern half of the Iberian Peninsula.

“They will remain significantly high in the southeastern half, as well as in parts of the Balearic and Canary Islands, reaching 40 degrees in the Guadalquivir and low-pressure areas in the southeast.”

Join the Manchester Evening News WhatsApp group HERE The weather is expected to cool down on Tuesday, with most temperature warnings lifted. The north east could experience showers and thunderstorms, especially near the Pyrenees.

Majorca remains under a yellow heat alert, with temperatures predicted to reach 36C, and the Mediterranean coast is also set to stay hot.

Aemet’s forecast for Tuesday reads: “A significant drop in temperatures will occur in the southeastern and eastern parts of the Iberian Peninsula.

“However, temperatures will remain significantly high in parts of the Mediterranean peninsula, the Balearic Islands, and the Canary Islands. Showers and thunderstorms will be locally heavy with very strong gusts in the Pyrenees, the eastern Iberian Peninsula, and areas in between.”
