The Met Office commented on this timeframe: “The rather changeable pattern of preceding days will likely still be in place across northwestern areas of the UK at first. Further southeast, predominantly fine, with a spell of hot weather looking increasingly likely at the start of this period.

“Much of England could see high temperatures for at least a couple of days and there is a possibility that the heat could last further into the week, especially in the south, where there is also the possibility of some thunderstorms.”

The counties experiencing these elevated temperatures on August 21 and 22 include: Hampshire, Berkshire, Surrey, West Sussex, London, Kent, Hertfordshire, Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire, Gloucestershire, Somerset, Wiltshire, Essex, Cambridgeshire, Northamptonshire, Warwickshire, Worcestershire, Herefordshire, Shropshire, Staffordshire, Leicestershire, Norfolk and Suffolk.

Regarding this spell, the Met Office stated: “Beyond this, probably a resumption of widely somewhat cooler, fresher conditions, with a lot of dry weather to be had in the south under the influence of high pressure. Meanwhile a rather more changeable and breezier theme will continue further to the north.”

Today: The majority of the UK will stay dry, enjoying abundant sunshine and diminishing winds. Northern Scotland will remain blustery with coastal gales and continued rainfall or showers.

The sunshine will bring pleasantly mild conditions. Saturday: Scotland will continue to experience blustery conditions with scattered showers. Northern England may see some initial rainfall.

Elsewhere, expect dry weather with generous warm sunshine and predominantly light winds.

Outlook for Sunday to Tuesday: The north will see unsettled conditions with intermittent rain or showers and frequently strong winds. Southern areas will remain largely dry with bright spells.
