Amber Kacherian, from Florida, USA, visited the UK with her American friends and they decided to explore Asda for the first time – but they weren’t impressed

When Americans visit the UK, they encounter a host of new experiences, be it their first journey on the London Underground, savouring traditional British fare like fish and chips, or navigating a British supermarket.

They’re bound to spot numerous differences during their UK holiday, including things absent back home in the US. One such stark contrast is food shopping, as Amber Kacherian, a content creator from Florida, USA, discovered during her UK sojourn with her American pals.

Known for her humorous social media videos, Amber ventured into Asda for the first time while visiting York.

She posted a TikTok video chronicling her shopping adventure at the renowned supermarket.

Kicking off the clip outside the store, Amber confessed: “I don’t really know what to expect but I think it’s like the UK equivalent of Walmart? Well, let’s go find out!”

Upon entering the supermarket, she was surprised by its “small” size, likening it to the deli section of an American Walmart.

The visitor came across some unfamiliar chocolate bars, including Twirl Xtra and Cadbury Mini Rolls, which caught her eye. She noted that there’s a similar treat in America by the brand Little Debbie.

However, she took issue with a football cake, branding it “unacceptable” as she insisted it was a “soccer ball.”

Her mate was chuffed to find a gluten-free loaf of bread, remarking that it would cost “at least seven dollars (£5.21) in America”, but Asda had it priced at a mere £1.90.

Another friend spotted the Walkers crisps aisle and quipped that they’re “clearly Lay’s but they’re the wrong name.”

Both Walkers and Lay’s are crisp brands owned by PepsiCo, sporting similar packaging but different names due to Walkers’ successful UK heritage.

The American visitors also noticed a difference in flavour offerings, such as prawn cocktail, roast chicken, and cheese and onion, which contrasted with their familiar sour cream and onion back home.

A third companion picked up some Lynx body spray and observed: “So by the text of this, it’s clearly supposed to be what we would call Axe body spray in America but it’s Lynx over here.”

As they continued their exploration, Amber mused: “It’s like being in America but everything is just a little bit wrong.”

She added, “You can tell what stuff is supposed to be or what it would be in America but everything just has a different name here.”

However, these observations from the TikToker and her friends didn’t sit well with Brits in the video’s comments section. One user retorted: “Walkers is one of the most popular uk crisp brands, it’s definitely not a knock off version of Lay’s. It’s so interesting to see what Americans think of the UK.”

Another individual highlighted: “You come to our country and tell us how to say things.”

A third person remarked: “Everything is wrong here” erm rephrase that love, “everything here is different from what you are used to.”

An additional viewer chimed in: “Just because it’s different doesn’t mean it’s wrong! !” While another added: “Saying Lucozade is meant to be Gatorade HAS to be a crime.”
