A former Strictly Come Dancing star has revealed why she turned down two professional partners before signing up for the BBC show last year

Former Strictly Come Dancing star Toyah Willcox turned down two partners before joining the show as she admitted “it felt wrong”.

The 80s music icon became the second celebrity to be eliminated from last year’s series, alongside her professional partner Neil Jones.

During her appearance on Good Morning Britain on Friday (September 12), Toyah chatted with Kate Garraway and Rob Rinder about her decision to choose Neil after turning down the show’s original partner suggestions.

“Lots of people feel like they don’t have control over things. You seem like a person that grabs your own pen in life and writes chapters for your own novel. And to that extent, you will not be told, and that partly seems some of the source of your success,” Rob remarked, reports Wales Online.

“When you were on Strictly, for instance, they offered you a couple of young dancers and you said, ‘Absolutely not.’ What did you say to them? Because I think it was quite explicit.”

Toyah responded: “I did not want to be with someone who was so young that was going to have to work with me so intimately. It would have felt completely wrong.

“I chose Neil Jones because I liked him, I loved every minute with him, but that age gap wasn’t so enormous.”

Kate then enquired: “Did you feel like it might make you look older or did you feel it was inappropriate?” with Toyah adding: “Just inappropriate. I have no worries about looking older. I’m 68, so I’m perfectly aware of that.”

Looking back on her Strictly experience, the star went on: “I loved every minute but I disagreed with everything the judges said, I was brilliant. And that’s my mindset. You can say whatever you want, but [in my head], I’m brilliant.”

Rob concluded: “I just want everybody to go into the world with that mindset. Hold your own pen and be more Toyah Willcox.”

Strictly is set to make its comeback to television later this month, with the launch show having been filmed at Elstree studios earlier this week.

This year’s line-up includes Harry Aikines-Aryeetey, aka as Nitro from Gladiators, Love Island’s Dani Dyer, Lorraine star Ross King and former Emmerdale actor Lewis Cope.
