Donald Trump made his first public appearance in a week on Tuesday, with many people pointing out his ‘rough’ look and questioning his health after ‘death’ rumors
On Tuesday, US President Donald Trump made his first public official appearance in the Oval Office following a brief absence over the weekend, with numerous observers commenting on his ‘weathered’ appearance.
Running approximately 45 minutes behind schedule for his own 2 p.m. Oval Office press briefing to reveal that U.S. Space Command would be relocated to Alabama, overturning a Biden-era decision to maintain it at its temporary base in Colorado, he delivered an unusually brief address.
Whilst Trump frequently arrives late to his scheduled engagements, this particular delay followed weekend speculation about his “death”, with many questioning the President’s wellbeing.
According to the Mirror US one political pundit said: “He looks rough and more orange than normal. Wonder if the press will ask the important question of why he was absent for a week.”
This emerged alongside conspiracy theories suggesting a Trump body double had been deployed.
During President Donald Trump’s administration announcement, one journalist enquired how he had discovered the rumours surrounding his own death.
Trump chuckled and responded: “Really? I didn’t see it, you know, I have heard it’s sort of crazy, but last week I did numerous news conferences, all successful. They went very well, like this is going very well, and then I didn’t do any for two days and they said there must be something wrong with him.”
Trump seized the opportunity to have a swipe at his predecessor as well. Trump quipped: “Biden wouldn’t do them for months. You wouldn’t see him and nobody said anything.”
More social media users started highlighting Trump’s appearance during the announcement.
“His eyes are still funky. Somethings wrong,” one individual observed. A second user commented, “Looks like it took an extra 50 minutes to make him look alert and camera ready.”
Another person noted that Trump’s hands appeared to have more makeup than normal, given recent concerns about bruising on his hands potentially signalling underlying health issues. “He looks rough. Extra hand makeup applied,” they remarked.
However, several others made intriguing observations, given the prevalence of “Mar-a-lago Face” amongst his inner circle in the Oval Office. “Smooth forehead, enhanced cheekbones, did he spend the week having botox / cosmetic adjustments?” one user questioned.
Another chimed in: “Bro just had a facelift.”
Space Command’s duties include carrying out operations like enabling satellite-based navigation and military communications whilst providing warnings about missile launches.
Alabama and Colorado have continuously vied to host Space Command owing to its significant economic benefits for the region. The location also symbolises a political triumph, with politicians from both Alabama and Colorado asserting their state provides the superior location.
Huntsville, Alabama, affectionately known as Rocket City, has long been home to the Army’s Redstone Arsenal and NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center. The Army’s Space and Missile Defense Command also resides in Huntsville, a city that earned its nickname through its pivotal role in building the initial rockets for the U.S. space programme.
The location of the Space Command has sparked debate for four years. In 2021, the Air Force identified the Army Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville as the prime spot for the new U.S. Space Command.
This decision came after evaluating six states based on infrastructure capacity, community support, and costs to the Defense Department.
However, in 2023, then-President Joe Biden declared that the Space Command would permanently be based in Colorado Springs, Colorado, which had been serving as its temporary headquarters. The Biden administration maintained that keeping the command in Colorado Springs would avoid any disruption in readiness.
A review by the Defense Department inspector general was unable to conclusively establish why Colorado was selected over Alabama. It had been widely speculated that Trump, who enjoys robust support in Alabama, would move the Space Command back to Alabama.
