London Underground workers are striking for the final time today, as part of a five-day Tube strike in the Capital, spelling travel mayhem for commuters. . . again.
Members of the Rail, Maritime and Transport (RMT) union have downed tools for a fourth day over an ongoing row concerning pay and working hours. A limited Tube service will be available until 6pm today on just a few select lines, with minimal to no service across the London Underground network all week.
The Elizabeth Line and London Overground are set to operate as usual, but may not be able to stop at stations linked with a Tube line. Commuters have been cautioned that these services, along with buses, will likely be more crowded – with huge queues seen earlier this week.
Today’s strike includes the DLR line, which has seen only one day of action so far. The Tube overall will open later than usual on Friday, September 12, at 8am.
Travellers have also been alerted that some stations served by Great Northern, Southern and Thameslink will be closed and train schedules altered. London Underground station staff will not be available to open some of these stations at certain times on some days, meaning passengers will not be able to enter or exit and trains will not stop there.
RMT general secretary Eddie Dempsey said yesterday: The mayor has to intervene. He keeps telling us to return to the negotiating table – well, if he invites us to a meeting, we will attend.
Our members are not asking for a king’s ransom. We want progress towards recognition about the impact of shift work.
“We are not asking for an immediate drop from a 35-hour week to 32. We have been discussing this since 2018 and we are open to discussions.”

- Windrush
