Ruben Amorim has been under increasing pressure in recent weeks and former Manchester United goalkeeper Ben Foster believes it is only a matter of time before he is sacked

Ruben Amorim has been cautioned that his days as Manchester United manager could be numbered, with Oliver Glasner tipped as a possible successor. The Portuguese boss has come under increasing scrutiny in recent weeks after United endured their poorest start to a season since 1992-93.

Saturday’s 2-1 win over Chelsea at Old Trafford offered some respite as his team showed a fighting spirit. However, former United keeper Ben Foster believes it’s simply a matter of time before Amorim gets the boot, claiming his side have struggled to gel this season.

He’s also backed Crystal Palace boss Glasner as a natural replacement following the Eagles’ impressive start to the campaign, despite losing key players during the summer window.

Speaking on his Fozcast podcast, the former Wrexham goalkeeper said: “I think he [Amorim] has got a couple months left, probably. He’ll go through a bad little run of two or three or four games in a row where he loses and eventually they’ll go, ‘Right, we’ve had enough now, it’s obviously not working.'”.

“I just watch them, and I don’t really see any kind of cohesion. Somebody who would be good for Man United is Glasner. He’s only got nine months left on his contract at Palace. My only worry about it is that Man United are so sick and tired of playing three at the back.

“If they go and get Glasner and he goes, ‘Right, I’m playing three at the back,’ they’ll go, ‘Nah, come on mate. This isn’t going to work.’ For this guy to have lost five star players though and for Palace still look like they’ve got better. They’re fifth in the league.”

Glasner was among several candidates previously highlighted as potential successors for Amorim should he be sacked. Betting firms also named Andoni Iraola, Gareth Southgate, Marco Silva and Mauricio Pochettino as other possible contenders.

Amorim was recently rumoured to be returning to Portugal to manage Benfica amidst ongoing speculation about his future at United. However, these rumours were put to bed when former Red Devils boss Jose Mourinho took up the position last Friday.

Following United’s win over Chelsea, the ex-Sporting CP manager was asked about Mourinho’s appointment during a post-match interview.

“He’s the best Portuguese manager, and that won’t change,” Amorim told Portuguese channel DAZN. “He’s always been a very special person in our football, but also in the world, and he opened all the doors for us.

“I wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for Jose Mourinho. I think it’s going to be a lot of fun for you all in Portugal, and we’re going to enjoy it.”

When questioned about his own future, he added: “It’s what it is and we’ll see what happens. But [I’m] focussed only on Manchester and that will be my only club.”
