Manchester United host Chelsea in a crucial Premier League clash for Ruben Amorim.

The Portuguese boss is under mounting pressure at Old Trafford after a miserable start to the new season, following on from a dire campaign that saw the Reds finish 15th and lose the Europa League final.

United have just four points from four games so far in the league, and host a confident Chelsea team off the back of a damaging 3-0 defeat in the derby against Manchester City last Sunday. United were unable to match Pep Guardiola’s side, who were far from playing in top gear.

After overhauling his frontline, which will need time to settle with Matheus Cunha out injured, although the Brazilian is in line to return for the Chelsea clash, and Benjamin Sesko attempting to get up to speed with the Premier League, Amorim was given a goalkeeper on deadline day.

Having backed Andre Onana and Altay Bayindir all pre-season, like any manager should do, Amorim’s loss of faith in Onana was finally made public when the Cameroon international was allowed to leave on loan to Trabzonspor after losing his No.1 spot to Bayindir and the signing of Senne Lammens.

United’s leaky backline is now being held up by two inexperienced stoppers who are vying for the starting spot.

Lammens, a 23-year-old uncapped Belgian from Royal Antwerp, was signed in an £18.2million deal, and will hope to perform in the most scrutinised position in world football – Manchester United’s goalkeeper.

The weight of pressure and expectation is massive, something that a player of his CV has never been thrown into before. But United signed him for a reason, and must now back him.

Bayindir has started the season as Amorim’s first choice, and has made mistakes in every game so far. His hapless flap at defending an Arsenal corner should have been the end of his chance to be United’s first-choice goalkeeper.

The 27-year-old cost United that defeat on the opening day as Arsenal held on to win 1-0. The following weeks saw him fail to command his box as Fulham and Burnley both put past him. While he looked lost coming up against City in the derby.

Concerns surrounding the form, fee and wages of the Aston Villa and new City stopper ended interest in the two at an early stage, leaving Lammens as the man perceived by United to be the answer.

One thing’s for sure, Bayindir is definitely not the man to return United to the top, maybe not even the top half.

But Lammens could be, nobody knows yet. A slim-framed young goalkeeper named David De Gea arrived a strange name at Old Trafford, and he became the best goalkeeper in the world.

United fans are looking for a bright spark and an exciting arrival in a position that has been a problem for the past couple of years is exactly what supporters and Amorim are desperate for.
