The Godfather Part II was released 50 years ago and is still considered one of the greatest films ever made.

Netflix has dropped an “epic” classic film from 50 years ago that fans still can’t stop gushing about today.

The Godfather Part II landed on Netflix on Thursday, September 25, alongside the original The Godfather movie and Francis Ford Coppola’s re-release of the third instalment titled The Godfather Coda: The Death of Michael Corleone.

Whilst the first picture centred on Michael Corleone’s (played by Al Pacino) ascent through the Mafia ranks, the follow-up spans two separate timelines.

One storyline tracks Corleone’s path as the fresh Don of the formidable criminal dynasty, whilst the other focuses on his father Vitto’s (Robert De Niro) youth in Sicily and subsequent relocation to New York City.

Though supporters may still regard The Godfather as a masterpiece, many consider the sequel superior – something that became evident come awards season.

Like its predecessor, The Godfather Part II secured a staggering 11 Oscar nominations but managed to double its haul of victories with three gongs, including Best Picture, becoming the first follow-up ever to claim this honour.

Critical reception was initially divided, yet it raked in an impressive £68.3 million against a modest £9.5 million budget, demonstrating its rapid ascent to beloved status.

Cinema enthusiasts have flocked to Rotten Tomatoes over the years to heap praise on The Godfather Part II, with the review aggregator bestowing the crime saga an almost flawless 97% audience score.

Someone observed: “Through a gripping dual character study, the follow-up examines the interconnected yet separate journeys of its leads.

“The outcome is a stunning showcase of cinema that leaves viewers mesmerised by its vast scale, meticulous craftsmanship, and absolute brilliance.”

A second viewer concurred: “The finest example of when a sequel is superior to its predecessor.

“The Godfather Part II is one of the best films of all-time. A masterpiece. It’s that simple.

“It’s an epic vision of the corruption of America”, a fellow enthusiast described whilst another user remarked: “The Godfather, Part II grows more impressive by the minute.”

Meanwhile, another admirer simply declared: “Just a really terrific movie in every way.”

The Godfather II is now available on Netflix.
