The wife of depraved Brit zoologist Adam Britton has branded her husband a “monster” after his vile crimes came to light. Erin Britton broke her two-year silence about the moment she discovered the stomach-churning reasons why her husband had been arrested.

Last year, the former BBC pro who worked with David Attenborough was jailed for the torture and rape of animals that he owned and described as “f*** toys.”

He filmed himself raping, torturing and killing dozens of dogs and was thrown behind bars after admitting 56 offences relating to the torture and sexual exploitation of more than 42 animals on his rural property.

The croc researcher at Charles Darwin University pleaded guilty to 60 sick animal abuse charges, including raping puppies, which took place inside a shipping container “torture room.”

The Yorkshire-born sicko was sentenced to 10 years and five months with a six-year non-parole period.

After twisted details emerged, Britton’s wife Erin fled the family home.

In an exclusive interview with 60 Minutes Australia two years on, she said: “I cannot comprehend still, how somebody can be so depraved, so evil. He’s destroyed my entire life.”

The programme sees Erin go back to the marital home on the outskirts of Dawin for the first time since her husband’s arrest as she tells the presenter: “It’s going to be hard for me to go back because there was so much I loved about that property.

“It was amazing and it’s part of me. Everything in my world changed.”

The property was where the pair had kept crocodiles and ran a wildlife consulting business. But when Erin was away on exhibitions, more sinister things were going on there.

Police found dog remains in a fridge as well as filming equipment where Britton had shot videos of himself carrying out the sick acts. In messages to his twisted fanbase on the dark web, he admitted: “I love to hurt dogs, I live for it. I can’t stop myself hurting dogs.”

Recalling her husband’s arrest, Erin said: “I was away at the time. I had no idea why or what the crimes were, no knowledge at all.

“I didn’t find out until I spoke to his lawyer the following morning…she told me that there were crimes of animal cruelty and beastiality…my brain was like denial, no.

“Hearing that information is the most awful thing you could ever hear about your partner. It was so shocking and I felt sick.

“I couldn’t speak, I couldn’t think. My brain was having trouble processing and understanding how such a horrible thing could even exist in the world.

“And then to find out that this was relating to him.”

Erin, a wildlife specialist who once met Prince Harry and helped him catch a crocodile described her husband as a “psychopath…hiding in plain sight.”

The couple had worked with film companies, providing footage of crocodiles and once hosted David Attenborough who was filming a sequence for the BBC BAFTA-winning series Life in Cold Blood.

Britton and Erin were featured in interviews about their research on ABC News and Triple J’s Hack.

They also filmed themselves feeding a freshwater crocodile on their property during a Covid lockdown in 2020.

But Britton, who earned a PhD in zoology from Bristol University began offending in 2014, sexually abusing his own pet dogs Swiss Shepherds Ursa and Bolt in a secret “torture room’ constructed on his rural property in McMinns Lagoon.

He continued torturing animals until his arrest in April 2022 after a video of his vile acts, which he had shared online, was provided to Australia’s Northern Territory animal welfare authorities.

Britton has confessed to an interest in “zoo-sadism” and, in numerous online messages, he guided other people on how to perpetrate similar acts of abuse.

Detectives discovered Britton’s worst offending took place while Erin was away.

Asked how she did not know about her husband’s double life, Erin said: “That’s the question I’ve been asking myself every day. Why did I not know? What did I miss?

“Scratching my head, trying to play back events of the last few years to see if there’s any detail but there’s nothing.”

She added: “We were living in seperate rooms at that time. We still had a very good close bond, partnership/friendship but it had been a number of years since we were romantically together.

“He was spending a lot of time on his computer. When I talked to him, he was quite withdrawn, increasingly so.”

She said: “I only found out recently that my former pets (they’ve passed on) were probably victims and I feel terribly sad for them.”

Erin said she considers Adam a serial killer and psychopath and added: “Here is a situation which is off the scale, off the charts, that’s never been heard of. How do you deal with something like that?”
