EXCLUSIVE: Daily Star attended Lady Gaga’s The Mayhem Ball at London’s The O2 Arena and nothing could have prepared us for the warped theatre show she put on for her Little Monsters…

Lady Gaga’s The Mayhem Ball will transport you to a twisted underworld you’ll never be able to leave.

I was invited to London’s The O2 to join her fans, affectionately named Little Monsters, as they descended upon the capital decked out in their Gaga-themed attire for a night of flamboyance, horror and indulgence into the macabre.

Although she was an hour late, Gaga proved she was worth the wait and entertained the crowd with a haunting operatic track that rang through the arena, played over a recording of Mother Monster writing on parchment with a quill as we eagerly awaited her arrival.

The stage was a sight to behold with ornate theatre architecture and stalls hidden in darkness, while the entire production had a clear Victorian gothic influence with a sprinkling of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s The Phantom of the Opera and The Rocky Horror Picture Show thrown in.

Gaga’s The Mayhem Ball is split into four chapters, a story that follow two sides of Stefani Germanotta as she grapples with light and dark. The Mistress of Mayhem is the embodiment of her turmoil and the pair fight each other to the death, only ceasing when Gaga realises she must learn to accept and live with her mortal enemy until they become one.

As The Mayhem Ball got underway, we mesmerised mortals gazed from the sidelines hypnotised by her otherworldly vocals. As someone who has listened to Gaga for almost two decades, I can confidently say that you’ve heard absolutely nothing of her vocal range until you’ve seen her live.

Throughout the night she clambered inside giant cages, cuddled skeletons, sang from inside a staggeringly tall tiered dress, danced around a huge upturned skull, stumbled in crutches, sailed through the underworld in a gondola and paraded the Pride flag projected onto a cloak that cascaded from one end of the stage to another.

Gaga also invited some famous faces to join her as Wednesday stars Emma Myers and Evie Templeton served as backup dancers for her performance of The Dead Dance and LoveDrug, both wearing grey tulle skirts, white corsets and chokers round their necks as they waved to excited fans.

Gaga performed many of her newer hits interwoven with old classics like Judas, Poker Face, Paparazzi, Alejandro, Just Dance and Bad Romance, the perfect setlist for any fan whether old or new.

She somehow managed to create a deeply immersive gothic hellscape within The O2 Arena as only she can, with an equally imaginative storyline crafted by her distinctively dramatic style. I simply cannot recommend going to see The Mayhem Ball enough as it was arguably one of the best live music events I’ve ever experienced.

I was utterly entranced from start to finish and left speechless, almost completely overwhelmed with what I’d seen. Gaga is, of course, one of the best voices of our generation – everyone knows this – but after watching her perform live first hand, I now realise she is first and foremost a storyteller at heart with a clear and undeniable dedication to her craft.

She has to be seen to be believed.
