Motorists on the M6 are facing significant disruption this morning due to a serious accident. Traffic was brought to a standstill in both directions between J35 for Carnforth and J36 for Kirkby Lonsdale because of an ‘overturned vehicle’.
The incident was initially reported at approximately 5.15am today (October 3), with police and fire services responding to the scene.
National Highways North West has announced that traffic has now been released in both directions, however, two lanes remain shut on the northbound carriageway.
There’s over two miles of congestion leading up to the scene and drivers are being advised to ‘allow extra time’, reports Lancs Live.
Traffic monitoring service Inrix reports: “Long delays and two lanes closed due to overturned vehicle on M6 Northbound from J35 A6070 (Carnforth) to J36 A590 (Kirkby Lonsdale).
“Sensors confirm traffic is able to pass the scene after being blocked for around an hour.”
National Highways did confirmed that the incident is over, but major tailbacks will continue, stating: “Traffic has now been released in both directions on the #M6 in #Cumbria between J35 (#Carnforth) and J36 (#KirkbyLonsdale).
“Two lanes (of 3) however remain closed on the northbound carriageway at this time. There’s 2.5 miles of congestion on approach so please allow extra time.”
