Lewis Capaldi was left red-faced by Martin Brundle during his grid walk at the Singapore Grand Prix when the legendary interviewer mistook the musician’s brother for him in a hilarious incident

Martin Brundle has offered his “sincere apologies” to Lewis Capaldi after a hilarious double mix-up during his Singapore Grand Prix grid walk.

The Sky Sports icon is famous for his pre-race segment where he mingles with a mixture of Formula 1 personalities and celebrities, armed with just a microphone and his sharp wit. As is inevitable with live broadcasting, things don’t always go to plan and recent years are littered with countless memorable Brundle blunders, plus some moments where he’s been completely ignored.

And fans will be talking about his encounter with the singer Capaldi on Sunday for years to come. After a brief conversation with Superman actor David Corenswet, Brundle approached another gentleman and announced “Lewis, wonderful to see you,” clearly believing he was speaking to Lewis Capaldi. But he was quickly corrected by the amused bloke who replied: “I’m his brother!”

At that moment, the real performer appeared from behind his sibling’s shoulder, already giggling about the mix-up. And he was in stitches by the end of the brief interview when he offered his hand to Brundle, only for the Sky commentator to walk off.

Social media was abuzz with reactions, and Brundle even received a friendly ribbing from his co-commentator, David Croft, at the end of the race. Brundle had mistakenly thought that Capaldi was wearing the McLaren cap that was actually sported by his brother, reports the Express.

However, he has since apologised to the Scottish singer on social media. Responding to a post by Capaldi, who shared a video of himself shaking his own hand after being overlooked by the Sky Sports favourite with the caption ‘b****** by Brundle”, the Sky Sports interviewer wrote: “Sincere apologies, Lewis.

“I turned around to the camera with an urgent three-second count going on in my ears to wind up for the national anthem. Had no idea you were trying to shake my hand. A cardinal sin on my part which I hope to put right one day. Hope you enjoyed F1.”

The race itself was won by George Russell, who started from pole position and used his Mercedes’ speed to secure his second victory of the season.

This marked the first win for the Silver Arrows in Singapore since 2018, as both team and driver relished their success at what had previously been a challenging circuit for them.

There was also a reason to celebrate for McLaren, who amassed enough points to secure the constructors’ championship with six rounds still to go, equalling the record set by Red Bull in 2023.

However, this achievement was somewhat eclipsed by Oscar Piastri’s heated reaction to the team’s decision not to tell his teammate and title contender Lando Norris to move aside after the Brit had collided with him while overtaking during the first lap.
