EXCLUSIVE Nathan Aspinall would love to see more unique formats in darts – he just isn’t a fan of the World Grand Prix’s double-in, double-out
Nathan Aspinall joked he hates the World Grand Prix and it’s format – and that’s before he was drawn against Luke Humphries.
Aspinall faces an uphill battle during the opening night of darts’ most unique tournament – which requires stars to double-in and double-out – after he was drawn against the world No.1.
“I hate it,” Aspinall said with a chuckle when speaking to Daily Star Sport at the launch of the pop-up Target darts store. “I made the final once, but doubling in and out is the weakest part of my game.
“I’m a strong scorer and good at finishing combinations, but give me three darts at D16 and I’m rubbish! I’ll have a few days before the tournament practising doubles, but I try not to overthink it.
“If I hit my doubles, I’ll win; if I don’t, I’ll be going home early. That’s my attitude!”
Despite his struggles with the format, Aspinall is enthusiastic about experimenting with new ideas in darts.
“I’d love to see different formats. Not necessarily double in, double out, but maybe something like the American cricket format, or even longer legs — best of 3001 or something.
“It’d just be nice to mix it up from the usual best-of-11, best-of-15 games. It keeps things fresh and exciting!”
Aspinall admitted that his confidence had been high earlier this season – taking several memorable wins, including in front of a home crowd in Manchester.
However, The Asp decided he wanted some family time over the summer and stepped away from the sport for eight weeks. “It’s hard getting back into that routine of travelling and competing again.
“I think it’ll take me another couple of weeks to really get going, but by the time the Grand Prix comes around in October, I should be firing on all cylinders.”
