UK television fans have gathered to name the most iconic, groundbreaking and memorable TV moment ever aired and we’re betting it’s not what you think…

Brits have named best TV moment of all time and you’ll might be taken aback by what they chose.

Freeview channel Great TV issued a poll for viewers to submit their votes for the most iconic TV moment of all time and it was a neck and neck result for two of the most beloved television shows ever made.

In joint bottom place was Coronation Street twice – once for Alan Bradley’s 1989 tram crash scene and again for Hilda Ogden’s departure in 1987, followed by the Gavin and Stacey finale which aired back in 2019.

In seventh place was Happy Valley’s 2023 finale, in sixth was the M*A*S*H finale which saw Hawkeye’s farewell to Trapper in 1983, and in fifth was Line of Duty’s 2021 finale episode.

EastEnders’ bombshell 1986 scenes which saw Den Watts serve Angie his divorce papers came in fourth, while Mr Bates v The Post Office’s 2024 episode that showed Horizon numbers doubling landed joint place with a 33 per cent vote, next to Only Fools & Horses’ iconic Time On Our Hands episode which aired in 1996.

First place was given to Dallas for the Who Shot JR? storyline, which was revealed as his sister-in-law and former mistress Kristin Shepard back in 1980 (sorry, spoiler alert). Dallas was given an overwhelming 37 per cent vote and was crowned as the Top TV Show Moment after 21.6 million UK viewers tuned in almost half a century ago.

After the poll closed, Great TV’s Marketing Director Kate Gartland said: “From ‘Who shot JR?’ to Del Boy’s millionaire moment, these weren’t just TV shows – they were national events that brought us together, showing the power of good telly.”

“Television is such an important part of life and provides some of our fondest memories, and our Great channels celebrate that with line-ups full of nostalgia and fan favourites.”
