As fears grow that China will start a full-scale invasion on neighbouring Taiwain, Chinese state TV showed footage of an army of ‘robot wolves’ being used in a practice drone-led assault

In its latest attempt to showcase military strength, China has unleashed its new warfare tactic – an army of ‘robot wolves’.

As fears grow the country is preparing to invade neighbouring Taiwan, China seems determined to pile on the pressure with new military technology. Having first been unveiled at an airshow last year, recent state TV footage revealed the ‘robot wolves’ have now been used in a practice drone-led assault on a beach.

The animal-like devices are designed to reduce casualties by replacing human soldiers and they are able to clear barbed wire and other obstacles easily. The machines are also able to fire precise shots and work in rough terrain.

Chinese state media has reported the ‘robot wolves’ weigh around 70kg and can also hit targets up to 100m away.

The People’s Liberation Army will be able to use the ‘wolves’ in a similar way to ‘drone swarms’ – a group of unscrewed aerial vehicles (UAVs) that can operate together as a networked system. This has become a crucial tactic on the Ukraine war and has been used to overwhelm air defences.

The recent military exercise also appeared to feature a pack of first-person-view kamikaze drones.

These latest drills come amid growing fears that China is preparing to invade the island nation of Taiwan.

Most recently, new satellite images of China’s top-secret Lop Nur military base, dubbed the country’s ‘Area 51’, highlight huge efforts by the Chinese military to expand the facility.

Professor Anthony Glees, a security and defence expert from the University of Buckingham, said of the images: “Xi has heard his chum Putin saying Russia will resume nuclear weapons testing, has heard Trump responding immediately by saying the USA will do the same thing and Xi wants a slice of this particular cake as well.”

He added: “Since September, there have been multiple signs that President Xi is now firmly on the warpath, and democratic, anti-Communist Taiwan under an ever-mounting existential threat.”

In addition, earlier this year, China deployed dozens of warships and planes to encircle Taiwan in menacing, large-scale war games.

Chilling satellite pictures also revealed what appear to be Beijing’s ‘invasion barges’ – gargantuan platforms that connect to form a mobile pier that could enable thousands of soldiers and hundreds of vehicles to land on Taiwan’s shores.

The multi-day military drills forced Taipei to respond by scrambling fighter jets and warships of their own to dissuade any overzealous members of the PLA from posing a serious threat.
