Cold Weather Payments are made by the DWP to eligible households
As the mercury dips below a certain level, some households across the nation could be eligible for additional assistance towards their heating bills.
Cold Weather Payments, administered by the Department of Work and Pensions (DWP), are automatic payments provided to certain qualifying households during particularly cold spells. These payments are made to individuals who claim specific benefits or receive Support for Mortgage Interest.
The scheme typically operates from the beginning of November until the end of March each year. Payments are made to eligible households when the temperature in their area is recorded or forecasted to be zero degrees celsius or below for seven consecutive days.
Eligible recipients will then receive £25 for each 7-day period of cold weather from the start of November to the end of March.
Who qualifies for Cold Weather Payment?
Individuals receiving certain benefits will automatically receive the payment. The following benefits qualify for the Cold Weather Payments:.
When are Cold Weather Payments made?
From November 1 to March 31, eligible households will receive a £25 payment for each seven-day period of particularly cold weather as part of the Cold Weather Payments scheme.
Following each period of cold weather, eligible households will receive the payment within 14 working days.
How to check you got payment?
The Department for Work and Pensions’ (DWP) Cold Weather Payments are automatically distributed to those eligible due to their receipt of certain benefits, eliminating the need to apply for the scheme. The payment is then directly deposited into the same bank or building society account as your benefit payments.
However, if you suspect you should have received a payment but haven’t, you can get in touch with the Pension Service or Jobcentre Plus. If you’re on Universal Credit, simply log in to your account and leave a note in your journal.
If you don’t have an online account, give the Universal Credit helpline a ring instead. The phone number can be found on letters regarding your Universal Credit claim.
