Idrissa Gana Gueye was given his marching orders on Monday evening for fighting with his team-mate and Daily Star Sport looks at four other incidents
Team-mates fighting, surprisingly, isn’t all too common in football – and yet when it does happen it causes quite the spectacle.
Everton, with 10-men dug in for a monumental victory over Ruben Amorim’s Manchester United on Monday evening, and yet the big talking point from the game was Idrissa Gana Gueye raising his hand to a team-mate.
It’s not the only time it’s happened – think back to Kieron Dyer and Lee Bowyer throwing haymakers at each other – and it almost certainly won’t be the last….
And with that in mind, Daily Star Sport looks at five times team-mate have traded blows and been sent off as a result…
Idrissa Gana Gueye and Michael Keane
There’s only really one place to start – and that’s with Monday’s fight that saw Gueye dismissed for striking Michael Keane across the face.
Bruno Fernandes had almost sent the Red Devils ahead when the pair locked horns in disagreement. Jordan Pickford came rushing across to play peacemaker, but not before Keane was struck.
Gueye was quick to issue an apology, while Everton boss David Moyes admitted he liked seeing his player fight – he might not have had the same opinion if the Toffees lost…
Marcao and MuhammedKerem Akturkoglu
Turkish football making headlines in the USA – well, it tends to happen when one team-mate decides to headbutt another.
It’s 2021 and Galatasaray are taking on Giresunspor inside of an empty stadium when Brazilian defender Marcao snapped at defender Muhammed Kerem Akturkoglu. The winger appeared to shush Marcao, who sprinted at his team-mate.
Rather than letting the incident slide he headbutted Kerem Akturkoglu before unleashing a flurry of punches. Marcao was sent off for his troubles, while Gala won the game 2-0.
Jermaine Beckford and Eoin Doyle
Back to these shores for a moment that left Preston boss Simon Grayson red-faced with embarrassment.
Grayson had just watched his side lose 2-1 to Sheffield Wednesday, but knew all the questions he was about to face would centre around Jermaine Beckford and Eoin Doyle who had just been sent off in the final minutes for fighting.
“In 30 years of being a footballer, player or manager, I’ve never seen an incident like that between two team-mates,” said Grayson. “I thought I’d seen it all at the Forest game last night but today has been an embarrassment with those players.”
Ricardo Fuller and Andy Griffin
Before Gueye was sent off on Monday, the last man to receive his marching orders for fighting with a team-mate was Stoke City’s Ricardo Fuller.
Stoke were leading 1-0 at West Ham when Andy Griffin slipped, allowing Carlton Cole to equalise for the Hammers. All of a sudden, hell broke loose as Fuller gave his captain an earful and slapped him, earning a red card.
Stoke’s embarrassment wasn’t quite done – West Ham would later find a winner.
Kieron Dyer and Lee Bowyer
The benchmark. In one of the Premier League’s most icon moments Dyer and Bowyer stopped playing football and started throwing haymakers at each other.
It was Gareth Barry, who was captaining the opposing team, that rushed over to try and break up the warring team-mates. “I was trying to let him punch himself out,” Dyer later said. “But by the time the fourth one came in, I thought ‘F*** this’ and launched one back.”
Newcastle were left with eight men, after already receiving a red card, and Bowyer was suspended for seven games while Dyer escaped with three.
