Liverpool spent massively this summer, welcoming the likes of Florian Wirtz, Hugo Ekitike and Alexander Isak to Anfield – but they also had their fair share of outgoing players
Jarell Quansah’s market value has rocketed from the £35million Liverpool received when they sold him to Bayer Leverkusen.
The 22-year-old centre-back, who emerged from Anfield’s youth setup just three years ago, made the switch to the Bundesliga giants this summer. Following his impressive displays under Kasper Hjulmand’s guidance, having featured in eight league matches, Quansah’s valuation has soared dramatically.
According to Football Observatory, the England international is now valued between £50m and £59m, with the higher figure representing a £24m jump from his original transfer fee to Leverkusen. It comes after Thomas Tuchel recently revealed that Quansah is marginally ahead of Trent Alexander-Arnold in the battle for World Cup selection next summer in North America.
Alexander-Arnold also left Liverpool this summer for Real Madrid, a transfer that sparked anger amongst devoted fans. Yet his spell at the Bernabeu has proved challenging, with the full-back managing only five La Liga appearances under Xabi Alonso this season due to injury.
With Quansah flourishing in Germany, Tuchel has shown a slight preference for the centre-half – who can also operate as a full-back – at present. Speaking after England’s 2-0 victory over Albania on Sunday, he said: “I have a lot of trust in Jarell.
“I see his talent, but I see the package. He is tall, he is fast, he is strong in build-up. He is strong in the air. I saw him very strong playing for Liverpool in this position so I always wanted to try.
“And he plays every minute for Bayer Leverkusen since the under-21 Euros. So he is at the moment a tiny bit ahead [of Alexander-Arnold].”
Detailing his meticulous approach to monitoring his available squad, Tuchel added: “First of all, it’s my job now to make contact with everyone, players like Trent. Players that are on our long list, 55 or 60 players, to reach out to them, be in touch with them, explain to them why they were not here.
“Explain to them what they have to do, where they can improve. Can they even do something or is it just a choice? So this is my job in the next weeks and months.
“Why would I not? We can do group visits. We can do Jude Bellingham and Trent together. And visit the clubs. And some of them we will call.
“But I hate phone calls. It’s better on FaceTime. Then I see the expression, at least, and get a feeling for the person. Or I need to visit them. Visit training, training grounds. Let’s see. Listen, we’ve just finished this camp and I think it’s important that I reach out to everyone, even to the guys we didn’t pick so regularly, to tell them where they are and give them honest feedback.”
Earlier this month, a Merseyside mural dedicated to Alexander-Arnold was defaced as the star returned to his hometown for a Champions League match between Liverpool and Real Madrid. The mural, unveiled on the corner of Sybil Road and Anfield Road in 2019, was smeared with white paint and the word “rat” was scrawled across it in large letters.
Liverpool emerged victorious over Real Madrid with a 1-0 win when the two teams clashed at Anfield on November 4, thanks to Alexis Mac Allister’s goal in the 61st minute.
Alexander-Arnold didn’t start the match for Los Blancos, but he did make an appearance as an 81st-minute substitute for Arda Guler. His entrance was met with a chorus of boos from the home crowd.
